Job Summary

Seeking a self-starter, detail-oriented Research Coordinator to oversee a federally-funded pilot clinical trial for reducing cannabis use in young adults and to assist with scientific tasks involving publishing findings and obtaining additional grant funding for related studies.

Responsibilities*

For the clinical trial, the coordinator will lead development of the intervention which includes social media and use of Amazon’s mechanical turk to create dynamic content; develop manuals and protocols; manage IRB submissions; train and supervise staff recruiting and delivering the intervention, providing back up in case of staff illness, etc;  schedule and prepare agenda and documents for project meetings. The clinical trial will recruit participants out of the Emergency Department at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, thus there will be some travel to Flint involved for: IRB meetings and training/supervision of staff during active study periods. Most work will take place during daytime hours in Ann Arbor, but flexibility is required for: staff training and supervision which may take place on selected evenings/weekends, and taking call from staff who work on evenings/nights/weekends during active recruitment/follow up periods. The remaining tasks involve supporting the lead investigator in research activities involving: literature searches and summaries to support manuscripts and grant applications, assisting with manuscript preparation (e.g., formatting data tables), etc. 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting in writing intervention protocols, content, and manuals; coordinating Investigator meetings to decide protocols, intervention development, survey finalization; conducting brief interventions in the ED (for intervention development purposes and staff training); providing recruitment training and supervision, subject recruitment and follow-up interviews. Work with Access Databases and the Data Manager to set up databases. This person must be flexible, have experience working as a team member, able to operate independently and have good communication skills. Comfort discussing sensitive topics with vulnerable populations is necessary. Also, experience working in a hospital ED setting preferred. This person will interact with and train staff to work with hospital personnel and handle problems that may arise in the ED as part of the research study.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health or related field.
  • 1 year of experience in a related field.
  • Well-versed in use of social media, particularly Snapchat.
  • Experience with Qualtrics.
  • Experience with high-risk populations/topics: substance abuse, mental health, crisis work, under-served/vulnerable populations.
  • Understanding of HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Experience in human subjects research.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team; demonstrated ability to lead a project and team.
  • Flexibility to take call on evenings/nights/weekends and to travel to Flint for IRB meetings and staff training/supervision during active study periods.
  • Experience with scientific writing.

**The applicant’s cover letter must address willingness to be flexible to take call on evenings/nights/weekends during active study periods (approximately 2-3 months in duration for a pilot trial; approximately 6-8 months for full clinical trial) and work occasionally in Flint for supervision/training purpose and IRB meetings*

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or related field.
  • Some clinical training and experience using Motivational Interviewing, particularly with regard to substance use.
  • Experience managing a team. 
  • Experience with scientific writing, including literature searches (e.g., PubMed, Google Scholar), and communicating scientifically about research findings. Experience in a hospital/healthcare setting. 

Work Schedule

Primarily days, with the need to take emergency call during active study periods on nights/evenings/weekends; and the need to train/supervise staff at times during the active study period on nights/evenings/weekends.
