Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays an integral role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with exceptional technology-related information, products, services, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.

Division Overview:

Research Applications and Advanced Computing (RAAC) focuses on supporting the unique and important needs of the Michigan Medicine research enterprise.  We work directly with researchers to understand their IT requirements and provide them with or direct them to the significant information technology and services across the university that enable their research.  RAAC includes services associated with research computing, data services, programming and innovation, research device, engagement and consulting, and application support for the diverse research departments of Michigan Medicine.

Position Overview:

The Research Applications & Advance Computing (RAAC) Division of Health Information Technology & Services seeks a self-motivated, collaborative, innovative, and service-­oriented leader for the position of Director of Research Technical Services. This position reports directly to the Senior Director for Research Applications & Advanced Computing and is responsible for oversight and performance of all staff in the technical service areas of the division.  This includes teams that provide support for research computing, data services, programming and innovation and research devices for the diverse research departments of Michigan Medicine.  The Director provides leadership of research technology services including development, integration, deployment, and operation in support of RAAC's current and emerging needs in support related to our research customers.  This position also represents RAAC through active participation in Michigan Medicine-wide IT governance and strategic planning. 


Strategic Planning:  Participate in research technical services strategic planning, bringing current knowledge and future vision of information technology in support of researchers in Michigan Medicine. Facilitate RAAC’s strategic technical research plan in conjunction with HITS strategic planning efforts.

Change management: Lead complex change initiatives and associated communication strategies to successful completion.  Identify changes and trends in research technical services and involve key stakeholders in interpreting the implications, maintaining RAAC on the forefront of serving the diverse needs of the research constituents.

Provide necessary IT services:  Partner with diverse stakeholders including MSA Dean’s Office, Department Chairs, Department Administrators, other IT providers, faculty, and staff across Michigan Medicine to ensure diverse information technology needs are understood and effectively met.  Leverage HITS Sr. Directors, IT Governance and Committees, and other structures to accelerate collaboration in addressing research technology service needs across the research enterprise at Michigan Medicine.  Manage the supply and demand for potential services and oversee life cycle for services delivered by the Research Technical Services teams. Leverage other Michigan Medicine and UM campus service providers wherever applicable.

Supervision and staff development. Direct a highly skilled and diverse team of IT professionals.  Recruit, coach, and counsel managers for success and assist employees with career development planning.  Implement training, cross-training, and standard practices to ensure timely and effective customer service.

Collaboration across campus IT.  Collaborate with UM campus IT leadership to actively strengthen community and cohesion of University of Michigan IT providers in information technology planning and delivery across the university.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the team and oversee execution of strategic objectives related to the research mission and vision
  • Oversee the design, selection, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of technical services related to research.  Ensure industry-standard and best business practices are established and followed as they relate to technical services provided to our research partners and the research community
  • Ensure project deliverables are produced with high quality, aligned to budget and within committed timeframes.  Contribute to engagement, applications and software as well as technical and project planning for the RAAC division  while achieving high customer satisfaction
  • Establish operational processes, procedures and standards that align to our customer and division needs
  • Establish, maintain and guide an organizational structure of multiple teams for which this role has oversight and responsibility.
  • Ensure standard practices are followed for staff work assignments, workload management, progress tracking, demand management, project and portfolio management
  • Serve as a leader in working with Michigan Medicine constituencies as it relates to a wide range of institutional research practices and services. 
  • Participate in HITS, and Michigan Medicine committees, workgroups, etc. as they relate to the role and goals of the RAAC division
  • Forecast direct and indirect costs and compile budgets including resources, material, testing, and capital expenses. 
  • Control the expenditure of resources, time, and funds to ensure cost effective and efficient operations in accordance with established budgets and guidelines
  • Attend local, state, and/or national conferences applicable for accomplishing job responsibilities
  • Recruit, coach, and counsel managers for success.  Conduct performance reviews, administer salary program to departmental staff, and assist employees with career development planning and training
  • Remain current with industry trends; investigate and establish new technologies related to mission of team, department, and division

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree required
  • 7 to 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation and management of IT services
  • At least 5 years of experience in a management and/or supervisory position over a large staff (10 or more) with multiple roles, responsibilities, and job titles
  • At least 3 years leading and supervising leaders who have managerial and/or supervisory responsibilities over a team of staff
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and supervise team members including all aspects of team administration including, but not limited to recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluations, performance improvement management, salary administration, handling staff grievances and complaints, and fostering staff growth
  • Leadership role(s) in cross-organizational and cross-enterprise committees and leadership groups
  • Experience in understanding, supporting and implementing technical services in an enterprise-wide architecture
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and experience with public speaking
  • Experience in technical engineering in an effort to support complex research needs
  • Experience with data sharing and integration efforts as well as storage solutions
  • Experience in managing vendor infrastructure, applications and understanding of technical requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to create, communicate, and achieve buy-in on successful institution-wide technical service strategies
  • Promote a model of customer service behaviors and attitudes that foster collaboration and break barriers which impede good service delivery
  • Track record of participation in governance programs and committees, cross-organizational and cross-enterprise committees and high-level leadership groups
  • Demonstrated experience with budget planning, monitoring, and conformance

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree or higher (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Experience working in an academic medical center
  • Experience evaluating and recommending new technologies in an ever-changing & diverse environment
  • Create, manage, and lead resource and capacity management across a broad range of operational and project-oriented commitments
  • Able to provide leadership and delivery of large, complex, cross-organizational and enterprise-wide technical research services
  • Track record of achieving high customer satisfaction
  • Familiar with Michigan Medicine Human Resource Policies and Practices and with university administrative and business tools such as Concur, timekeeping, and other tools which would enable effective oversight and hiring practices
  • Experience in leadership and professional development training
  • Ability to create, compose content, effectively display, and get the message across; ability to deliver presentation to groups ranging in size from small to large and attendees ranging from care delivery professionals, health care organization and industry leaders, government officials, and other stakeholder audience members
