Department Overview:

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays an integral role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with exceptional technology-related information, products, services, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.

Division Overview:

Research Applications and Advanced Computing (RAAC) focuses on supporting the unique and important needs of the Michigan Medicine research enterprise.  We work directly with researchers to understand their IT requirements and provide them with or direct them to the significant information technology and services across the university that enable their research.  RAAC includes services associated with research computing, data services, programming and innovation, research device, engagement and consulting, and application support for the diverse research departments of Michigan Medicine. 

Position Overview:

The Research Device Support team in RAAC seeks a Research Technical Lead to lead the development and maintenance of a set of robust and sustainable solutions for research devices and systems.  The incumbent in this position will work closely with the Research Technical Services Director for the RAAC division, Sr. Michigan Medicine Leadership, and faculty to define an overall research device strategy that meets the requirements of our complex research environment within the budget and overall IT strategy for Michigan Medicine.  

Responsibilities*

  • Collaborate and gather technical requirements with cross-functional teams to provide robust and sustainable solutions for research devices and systems
  • Contribute by identifying and quantifying customer requirements, delineating the gaps between customer requirements and the capabilities of existing technology
  • Work with technical peers across Michigan Medicine, and the University, to find or develop solutions, while being mindful of existing IT services
  • Seek understanding of requested tasks to analyze for better alignment to enterprise practices and the organization's service catalog, promoting applicable services when appropriate
  • Instruct, direct, and oversee the work of the other Research Device support staff
  • Develop and document procedures and maintenance plans for the team
  • Act as project leader for projects with small budgets or limited duration
  • Understand research workflow and provide creative solutions to the user
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software and network problems for individual users
  • Assist in the installation, operation and maintenance of computer instruments, peripherals, and software used by researchers
  • Provide routine regular communication with all stakeholders even when resolution is assigned elsewhere
  • Perform root cause analysis on recurring problems and develop recommendations for resolution
  • Manage relationships with vendors to seek solutions to proprietary issues
  • Research issues and service requests in depth to seek resolution
  • Understand security policies and procedures (e.g., HIPAA, FISMA, FERPA)
  • Communicate clearly and factually the actions taken to complete requested work
  • Proactively use resources to seek creative solutions for uncommon challenges (e.g., search engines, blogs, white papers, user manuals)
  • Troubleshoot communications of advanced peripherals (e.g., raspberry Pi, NAS (QNAP, Synology, Drobo), sensaphone)
  • Use automation tools, when possible, to help bring more stability, usability, and functionality to the researchers on the various platform that are in use
  • Work with internal HITS divisions to help develop, update, and maintain workflows for any processes needed to deliver service to the researcher
  • Stay current with relevant advances in IT
  • Develop and follow best practices and procedures and share knowledge within your teams and HITS

Required Qualifications*

Requirements for Senior Position:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant research or technical field is required for this position, or equivalent experience and training
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, analysis, problem solving, and working independently to successfully design services and workflows to implement server, storage, networking, and infrastructure technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently meet or exceed expectations for exemplary customer service
  • Demonstrates good general business skills, a highly professional attitude towards colleagues and customers, and a strong desire to work as a valuable team member in a research department
  • Ability to work with many different OS versions (including Linux), older and proprietary systems
  • Demonstrates deep understanding of server infrastructure, including TCP/IP networking, virtualization environments, or enterprise application design and delivery
  • Proficient in one or more programming languages, scripting languages, or automation platforms
  • Experience in developing, managing, running, and improving information technology services
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision
  • The ability to resolve multiple and varied issues simultaneously and autonomously
  • Familiarity with research systems, complex peripherals, large data sets, data and analysis methods, research applications, and older computing hardware
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Requirements for the Intermediate Position:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant research or technical field is required for this position, or equivalent experience and training
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, analysis, problem solving, and working independently to successfully design services and workflows to implement server, storage, networking, and infrastructure technologies

Desired Qualifications*

  • Proven skills and experience managing and developing staff
  • Possess industry recognized Linux certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, Linux+)
  • Understand DevOps concepts, including CI/CD
  • Experience with containerization and orchestrations tools (e.g. Docker Swarm, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with Virtualization and Cloud Infrastructure services (e.g., VMware, AWS, vCenter, Azure, Google Compute Engine)
