Job Summary

The Livonia Surgery Center is seeking a team player that has strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks This position will provide customer service to patients in an ambulatory surgery center setting by facilitating business processes including check-in, pre-arrival services, scheduling, processing charges, telephone triage and general business office support functions; We are a small office and are actively seeking compassionate, committed and patient-oriented individuals who will share in the goal of creating the ideal experience for our patients, families and employees

Responsibilities*

Patient Services Assistant:

  • Receive and assist patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Schedule patient appointments with patients and/or referring clinic.
  • Monitor waiting area activity and assure a clean, organized, and safe environment.
  • Promote personal comfort and convenience of patients and families by routinely checking their needs.
  • Provide information regarding hospitals and community services as needed.
  • Process and compile patient paperwork for exams and clinical staff.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and triage to appropriate location.
  • Accurately record any phone messages and assure they are forwarded appropriately.
  • Call patients to remind them of upcoming appointments.
  • Utilize paging system to contact appropriate staff as required.
  • Prepare patient itinerary and all other appropriate correspondence.

Patient Services Associate:

  • Accurately and efficiently schedule patient appointments utilizing Cadence.
  • Management of pre-arrival functions to assure all necessary information has been obtained for clinic visits.
  • Serve as a resource for physicians and other staff, patients, and outside third parties for insurance authorizations and other managed care related issues.
  • Respond to patient inquiries related to special requirements of insurance plans, directing patient to insurance carrier as needed to address coverage and benefit questions.
  • Assist patients with payment questions on the phone or in person. Collect payments, co-pays and past due balances at patient check out using established department guidelines.
  • Reconcile clinic cash collections and credit card transactions daily according to specified clinic standards.
  • Ensure completeness of visit information including type of visit, reason for service, charge for service and diagnostic codes for processing professional and facility charges.
  • Participate in creating efficient patient flow coordinating with nursing/medical assistant staff and faculty.

 

Required Qualifications*

Patient Services Assistant:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0 -2 years of experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team setting.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Demonstrates active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills.

Patient Services Associate:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 -3 years of experience.
  • Exceptional customer service, verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills and ability to work in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance
  • Exhibits professional and positive image
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving skills and ability to make informed decisions.
  • Clerical experience, preferably in a medical setting
  • Demonstrates active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in a patient care setting preferably in a large complex health care setting
  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Ability to fully utilize Mi-chart (EPIC) to perform check-in, OR scheduling and processing of charges
  • Familiarity with Michigan Medicine's policies and procedures

Work Schedule

This position is Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM-4:30 PM.  The hours may vary within the hours of operation of 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM as needed to provide coverage.
