Job Summary

Please Note: Position will be filled at the Senior or Lead level dependent upon the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.

This position will partner with the Director of Human Resources and the UM-Dearborn Human Resources team in the development, implementation, and administration of human resources programs, policies and procedures that support the University community and the University’s goals.

Reporting to the Human Resource Director, the HR Consultant will be a member of a professional team that is responsible for providing strategic human resources guidance and support for both academic and nonacademic needs on campus, supporting human resources administration and operational functions, and providing advice and consultation to leadership, faculty, staff and students.  

  • Work with the Human Resource Director and the HR Team to implement positive leadership best practices on campus; including leadership development and staff engagement.

  • Provide advice and consultation to leadership and employees regarding interpretation and application of a broad range of human resource policies, procedures, practices, and laws.

  • Form and maintain successful partnerships with unit leadership in achieving performance excellence; generate options and recommendations that are responsive to multiple interests, reflective of best practices and aligned with organizational, college and/or unit strategic goals.

  • Provide advice and consultation to units regarding compensation programs and strategies including organizational structure, compensation philosophy, classification of work, and alternative reward systems.

  • Lead and develop recruitment and retention strategies in partnership with the colleges and units.

  • Conduct employee relations meetings and conflict resolution sessions including investigating, presenting case materials, facilitating decisions and agreements, and preparing responses.

  • Interpret and administer policy and labor agreements for management and staff; conduct grievance hearings, disciplinary review and special conferences, and compose written responses; may participate in contract negotiations with labor unions.

  • Represent the university in outside regulatory agency proceedings and assist with case preparation and presentation for litigation and arbitration.  Ensure compliance with the university affirmative action programs and state and federal laws.

  • Participate in the long-term resolution of conflicts and other employee relations issues by partnering with management to identify and reduce or eliminate root causes.

  • Participate in or lead project teams in the development and implementation of human resource programs, policies, business process and organizational changes.

  • Provide organizational development support including the design and delivery of customized training programs.

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor’s degree with a concentration in human resources, business administration or an equivalent combination of education or experience is necessary.

  • At least 5 years of experience working in a human resources specialist or generalist role in a university setting or comparable field is required.

  • Considerable experience in a broad range of human resource programs and services, including in two or more of the following areas: 

    • employee relations, compensation, employment, labor relations, organizational development, and affirmative action.

  • Demonstrate strong personal integrity, ability to form effective partnerships, ability to collaborate with others and work in a team environment.

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills, conflict resolution skills, the ability to work as an individual contributor, enthusiasm for teamwork and building collaborative partnerships.

  • Demonstrate a high level of responsiveness to the HR team, the customers being served, and the campus community.

  • Possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Have strong critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Possess substantial experience and proficiency with university HR systems and applications.

  • Have the ability to set priorities and accomplish tasks within allotted timeframes and work independently with a minimum of supervision.

  • Possess experience in utilizing project management techniques, decision-support data and resource system software.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience advising on a broad range of human resource matters involving tenure stream faculty, LEO and GEO contract matters.

  • Substantial knowledge and experience advising on faculty human resource matters and administering and providing consultation related to programs, policies and procedures for Instructional and Research Faculty as well as Graduate Student Instructors, Graduate Student Research Assistants and Graduate Student Staff Assistants.
