The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Michigan -Dearborn seeks an experienced professional to manage laboratories that are engaged in primarily biological science experiments in a primarily undergraduate teaching environment. The successful candidate must be able to perform a broad range of laboratory functions of varying levels of sophistication across the full spectrum of biology, including microbiology, biochemistry, and environmental sciences. The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all lab activities comply with Federal, State, and University health and safety regulations. The manager will establish goals, and schedules and coordinate laboratory administrative duties for the Biology Discipline. Ability to troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation, manage laboratory emergencies, and to resolve student laboratory assistants' conflicts are required. The Manager should be a good team player, and respond positively to requests for assistance from faculty, and staff alike.
Manage the operations for Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science laboratories engaged in performing teaching and research activities.
Provide advice, assistance, and guidance in a timely and positive manner to faculty and staff.
Ensure that all equipment/glassware/solutions are available as required. Provide oversight of stockroom inventory.
Supervise Dispensary operations.
Manage collection and disposal of chemical and hazardous waste.
Establish goals and schedules and coordinate laboratory administration, including the purchase and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
Schedule and ensure routine laboratory preventive maintenance including the calibration of equipment and instruments.
Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory safety program(s) and ensure that all activities are in compliance with organization goals and applicable regulations.
Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation, manage laboratory emergencies, and resolve student and laboratory staff conflicts as required.
Hire, train, supervise and develop lab assistants and student employees.
BS degree in Chemistry or closely related field such as: Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
At least four (4) years of relevant laboratory work experience.
Experience with health and safety regulations, policies, and techniques.
Strong, demonstrable laboratory skills, techniques, and ability to assess and evaluate laboratory assistant performance.
Ability to accurately diagnose and develop effective solutions to common instrumental and experimental problems.
Strong ability to work in a team environment and independently exercise initiative, judgment, and provide effective communication and leadership with students and faculty in laboratory safety and procedures.
Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to work collegially as a team with faculty, staff, and students.
Master's degree in Chemistry or related field such as: Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
Employment experience in an academic setting.
Knowledge of and familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
