Job Summary

The Department of Economics is searching for a highly-organized professional whose primary purpose is to solicit, organize, write, edit, post and report on online content highlighting the exciting activities and research being conducted in the Department. We are looking for a strong team player who demonstrates a high level of attention to detail and also has excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must be especially interested in web-based activities tied to Departmental programming and knowledgeable of social media campaigns.

This position will be 50% (20-hours per week) in the Department of Economics and reports directly to the Chief Administrator.  The position’s hours and work location can be flexible and will involve periodic evening and weekend responsibilities, some as part of the regular schedule and some as overtime.  Attendance at weekly staff meetings and periodic training opportunities will be required during regular business hours (8am-5pm M-F). Weekly meetings about work assignments are held with the Chief Administrator.


The primary responsibility for the position is to create and execute a communications plan for the Department.  This involves collecting, generating, investigating and following up on story ideas; planning, writing, coordinating and posting content for websites and social media; collecting, analyzing, and reporting website and social media metrics; providing content and graphics support for departmental events and activities; and participating as a full member of the Economics administrative team. 

Along with composing, organizing and posting content, the incumbent will broadcast announcements and online recaps of relevant events and programming on behalf of the Department through our web pages  ( and social media accounts (umichECON on FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram). This position is an integral part of the Department of Economics administrative and student services team and will participate in staff meetings/events. The position will assist with event coordination in the Department by arranging for & planning photography, coordinating design of published materials, broadcasting live from events on appropriate online platforms, and providing a helping hand with the execution of events whenever possible.  The incumbent will write content for and assist with special projects, reports and ad hoc assignments.

Writing and content coordination will be handled primarily through the Google and Adobe families of products, and some knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and database management will be necessary.  Online content for Departmental web pages is posted through the College of LSA’s online content management system (currently Adobe AEM) and mass communications/electronic newsletters are distributed via MailChimp and Cvent - training will be provided for these products, as required. Reporting on online activity and reach will be handled using Google Analytics and the analytics interfaces for the various social media platforms. A network of professionals handling social media marketing exists within the College of LSA and the wider University Community and this position will be expected to participate in activities/campaigns and build relationships within this group.  Online content will periodically need to be repurposed into publishable documents, including flyers, posters, brochures, advertisements, and related publications, and vice versa.  This position will coordinate the design and production of these materials with graphic design and publishing vendors.  This position will also manage the wordmark/logo maintenance, creation, identity compliance, and distribution for the Department and its programs and subunits.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and professional online writing/communications experience is required. Superior proofreading ability and highly engaging communications skills are required, and should be demonstrated in the applicant’s resume, cover letter and portfolio materials. Enjoys and has demonstrated success in working in a fast-paced environment. Must be a self-starter with strong initiative. Demonstrated ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously with high-level accuracy in a deadline-driven environment. Exceptional attention to detail in all areas of work. Ability to remain flexible and work with changing timelines and to be a reliable member of the administrative team. Extensive independence, creativity, integrity, and judgment are necessary in the execution of responsibilities. Strong time management, project management, and problem-solving skills are necessary. Considerable knowledge is required of the operation and application of computer software systems for online communications (Gmail and Google product family preferred), website (Adobe family of products), social media (particularly FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and LinkedIn), and various other emerging programs/media to facilitate online engagement to advance the academic missions of the department.

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree in economics or a communications field, or professional experience writing in economics or for academic audiences is strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience with Adobe Photoshop or any other photo editing program is desirable, as is previous experience using Google Analytics and/or in running a web-based or social media campaign. University of Michigan experience and/or familiarity with University organization, practices, policies and administrative procedures is desirable.

Additional Information

PLEASE NOTE:  This position is 50% (20 hrs per week), with flexibility required for the exact work schedule in any given week.  Some additional hours may be required from time to time (including on evenings and weekends). The salary range is $45,000-$53,000 full-time rate, with a compensation range of $22,500-$26,500.
