Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual for a Temporary Research Technician position in a vascular genetics laboratory in the Internal Medicine Department, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Michigan Medicine.  The candidate will become a member of a collaborative research lab involved in the identification and functional analysis of genetic factors contributing to cardiovascular diseases.  The candidate’s primary role will be to assist under supervision in managing the lab’s various mouse colonies.  The individual for this position will possess exceptional organizational skills and a sharp attention to details. This is an entry level position, with a temporary term of 6-12 months, with the possibility of extension.

  • Mouse colony management includes:  tagging mice and ear-clipping for genotyping; tail genomic DNA isolation, genotyping mice using PCR; assist in maintaining the breeding colonies; updating the detailed database of mouse lines.
  • Experiments may include: standard molecular biology experiments including DNA and RNA isolations, PCR and qPCR.  Other responsibilities may include general maintenance, cell culture experiments, and sample processing from the clinic (blood and tissue). 
  • General lab management includes keeping detailed and accurate record of your experiments and updating all databases.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in biological science or related health field with 1-2 years of experience in a research laboratory.
  • Previous experience with molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and mouse handling is highly desired.
  • Must be detail-oriented, highly responsible, and possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team.

  • Familiarity with University research policies and procedures.
