The University of Michigan Law is seeking to hire a Clinical Assistant Professor in its Community and Economic Development Clinic (CEDC) starting next academic year.

The CEDC provides transactional legal services to nonprofit and community organizations, social enterprises, and neighborhood-based businesses and entrepreneurs in Detroit and the metro Detroit area. The CEDC works to support vibrant, diverse, and sustainable communities and provide creative solutions to the transactional needs of clients in order to promote community and economic opportunity, and build and sustain effective community institutions in Detroit and other underserved urban areas in the region.

The Clinic works with both start-up and established clients. New organizations seek assistance in formation, governance, tax, and regulatory compliance. More established organizations seek the CEDC’s assistance to accommodate their organizations’ and programs’ growth; draft and negotiate contracts and leases; create worker cooperatives and social enterprises; counsel regarding land use, permits, and other regulations; provide tax advice on income-generating activities; advise on employment issues; counsel on risk management; and research and advise on intellectual property issues.

Required Qualifications*

The successful applicant will have significant experience in at least one of the CEDC’s core areas of practice, a strong interest in clinical teaching, a demonstrated commitment to public interest lawyering through transactional work in under-served communities, and the potential for scholarship and success as a clinical teacher.  Candidates mushold a J.D. degreanbe eligiblfor licensure in Michigan. 

Additional Information

This is a contractual appointment that can lead to Michigan’s version of clinical tenure. Clinical faculty are initially appointed to a 3-year contract which will be renewed for a second term if the candidate demonstrates the potential to meet the standards for a presumptively renewable 7-year contract. They are considered for promotion to that presumptively renewable contract near the end of their second 3-year term.  Clinical faculty have 9-month academic year appointments and are eligible for summer financial support for case coverage, special projects, and writing.  They have governance rights that closely parallel tenured and tenure track faculty.  Michigan’s faculty salaries and benefits are extremely competitive.
