The HITS Clinical & Operational Applications (COA) division is responsible for more than 300 clinical and business applications that patients, clinicians, and staff rely upon every day. The COA team is responsible for supporting inpatient and ambulatory care, clinical areas, and revenue cycle activities. A significant focus for the COA team is MiChart, Michigan Medicine’s electronic health record (EHR) system, including  implementing and configuring MiChart workflows, enhancements, optimizations, and new modules.

Job Summary

Under general supervision functions as a Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) contact and coordinator for the customer groups in assigned customer departments. Scope of responsibilities includes: engaging multiple customer groups to support and upgrade software systems and databases.  Implements short term and mid-term departmental plans for ensuring that applications are aligned with Michigan Medicine (MM) Strategic Goals. Ensures that implementation follows existing MM solutions and services.  Negotiates and documents Service Level Agreements between customer, vendor and HITS support teams. Documents necessary technical information required to facilitate on-call support.

As an ASAP, demonstrates ability to support the full range of project deliverables from requirements definition to implementation following the standards and methodology outlined by HITS.  This process engages MM customers, MM Compliance, HITS Purchasing and outside vendors.

Engages HITS resources to align efforts for successful implementation and support of applications.  Negotiates with support managers for prioritization and queuing of work.  Coordinates tasking and deliverables of project and support team members.  Develops and maintains project plans, perform high level technical analysis and, as required, develop architectural overview that ties together multiple technical teams and environments. 

Application Systems Support:

  • Perform analysis, design, development, maintenance, and support tasks for applications within the HITS Applications 1 support team.
  • Perform on-call support for production systems/applications in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, including problem investigation, escalation, resolution, and customer communication.
  • Perform planning, testing, maintenance, implementation, and upgrade activities for the programs, interfaces, scripts, reports, and databases for vendor-supplied applications.
  • Provide customer education/assistance and technical support.
  • Create and maintain proper documentation for supported systems.
  • Act as primary system administrator for supported systems.

Business Knowledge:

  • Interact with customers to determine priorities, procedures and application integrations
  • Develops solutions to departmental business requirements using an in-depth understanding of the key business processes within the supported department and knowledge of available IT systems.
  • Act as vendor liaison for supported systems.
  • Keep current with vendor strategy and maintain environment within acceptable versioning standards

Project Management:

  • Assist with new project planning and implementation.
  • Plan, test and implement system upgrades.
  • Formulate and define small project scope and objectives.
  • Analyze, compare, evaluate and recommend various courses of action to management.

Information Management:

  • Produce routine and ad hoc report requests.
  • Perform various database administrative tasks such as space management and database performance.
  • Administer accounts on supported systems.
  • Responsible for configuration management of some systems
  • Perform systems duties required to meet HIPAA security requirements.
  • Adhere to security standards established by HITS security team

Infrastructure Support:

  • Perform application operational support, implementation, and conversion activities: including system and data analysis, system certification and integrated testing, software maintenance, report development, data conversion design and testing, system deployment testing, system configuration, and system documentation in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Integrate applications with desktop.
  • Interact and coordinate with other IT groups within the HITS matrix to complete tasks

Leadership:

  • Provide guidance and training to less-experienced analyst/programmers.

Required Qualifications*

Requirements for Senior Position:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a programmer/analyst creating and supporting N-tier client-server, web-based, or cloud based applications using industry development tools (e.g. Visual Studio) and databases like SQL Server, Oracle, and FileMaker Pro.
  • Proven experience in creating and tuning advanced SQL queries
  • Experience in communicating complex technical concepts and information to a wide range of users.
  • Proven knowledge of client/server and web technologies, software programming and testing.
  • Proven experience in troubleshooting and resolving real-time user-based application problems.
  • Good interpersonal skills (including oral and written).
  • Positive customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies/tools.
  • Willingness to assume greater responsibilities.

Requirements for Intermediate Position: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 1 years of experience as a programmer/analyst creating and supporting N-tier client-server, web-based, or cloud-based applications using industry development tools (e.g. Visual Studio) and databases like SQL Server, Oracle, and FileMaker Pro.
  • Experience in creating and tuning advanced SQL queries
  • Experience in communicating complex technical concepts and information to a wide range of users.
  • Knowledge of client/server and web technologies, software programming and testing.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving real-time user-based application problems.
  • Good interpersonal skills (including oral and written).
  • Positive customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies/tools.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience implementing and supporting vendor-supplied applications
  • Previous experience developing client-server and web-based applications utilizing N-tier architectures Experience developing applications utilizing vendor toolkits
  • Experience with performance and capacity monitoring
  • Experience as a software developer / systems analyst in a healthcare environment with healthcare vertical applications.
  • Experience with security, including NTFS file/directory permissions, LDAP, and application-specific rights. Application DBA experience with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle. Microsoft MCAD, MCPD, or MCTS certification.
