Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Development for Children’s and Women’s Health, the MGO Associate will be responsible for fundraising efforts in the Department of Pediatrics and C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander’s Women’s Hospital programs, as assigned.  The MGO Associate will staff administrative and faculty leadership in the these areas, attend faculty meetings as needed, provide timely and accurate updates, support the outreach and engagement of philanthropic volunteers; implement prospect identification and engagement activities, participate in grateful patient fundraising and work with the Events team to support Children’s and Women’s signature and third party events.  The MGO Associate will play an integral role in strategies to identify and maintain donor relationships, implement strategies for cultivation and other outreach.  This position will focus on donor relationship building, philanthropic volunteer coordination and support for donors, event leadership activities and the increase of gift production. 

Responsibilities*

Prospect, Donor and Volunteer Engagement

  • Identify, assess, analyze, and design appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and donors and making the vitally important match between donors’ philanthropic interests and the department funding needs.
  • Proactively manage a portfolio of individual major gift prospects and donors, with an emphasis on gifts of $100,000 and more.
  • Plan and implement effective outreach and cultivation activities to enhance prospect identification and move solicitation and stewardship processes forward.
  • Work collaboratively with other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Health System campaign goals.
  • Initiate regular reports, analyze data, and maintain accurate and current records including contact reports and individual development and stewardship plans in the University’s donor database.
  • Maintain a portfolio of donors, spending approximately 70-80 % of time on direct fundraising efforts.
  • Conducts approximately 50-100 face to face visits with prospects and donors per year and participates in approximately 20 - 30 solicitations per year.

Communications

  • Supports philanthropic communication and engagement processes by writing and producing letters, updates, event materials and project support in collaboration with the strategic communications team.
  • Develop expertise in diseases to represent the programs in initial conversations with prospects, volunteers and donors.
  • Develop content, assist with communications and manage agenda and follow-up for volunteer meetings and activities.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of Michigan Medicine Office of Development priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and University needs.

Development Support and Collaboration

  • Develop a partnership with major gift officers to support donor work as required.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout Michigan Medicine and University.
  • Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

Fundraising Events

  •  Assist Events team at signature events, and 3rd party events.
  • Complete specific follow-up with individual donor prospects from events.

 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • At least three years of experience in fund raising, public relations, and/or alumni relations.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Proven experience with securing gifts.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine and mature personal style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others is necessary.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, as well as high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet challenging and changing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop good working relationships with internal and external constituents and to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
  • Detailed and results oriented with strong anticipatory instincts; a self-starter who takes initiative with excellent follow-through.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management.
  • High level of comfort when dealing with high net worth individuals, and an ability to maintain discretion, and a high level of confidentiality when dealing with benefactors.
  • Availability to work flexible hours which will include occasional weekend, evening hours and potential domestic travel.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Development experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures.
