Job Description: Assistant Professor of Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)
The Department of Education invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of ESL position to begin September 1, 2019. We seek a dynamic, innovative professional to join our team of educators to advance our mission to provide a high quality educational experience for our students rooted in strong academics, engaged learning and clinical field experiences. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the Department of Education in our ESL endorsement program—including curriculum, instruction and assessment, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification, and literacy for English Language Learners. Additional teaching opportunities may include courses in world languages, the doctoral program or teacher certification programs. The candidate will be expected to have strong research skills leading to scholarly publications and to seek external funds to support research activities. Other responsibilities will include student advisement, service on college/university committees and professional organizations, and collaborative work with faculty and K-12 school colleagues in the culturally diverse communities of southeast Michigan.

Required Qualifications*

  • Earned doctorate in an appropriate field with an emphasis on Teaching English as a Second Language or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages; additional related expertise in world languages, bilingual education or literacy is preferred. Highly qualified ABD candidates will be considered at the instructor level.

  • Experience teaching or working in a K-12 school setting in the United States

  • Experience in teaching in a culturally and linguistically diverse setting

  • Established record of scholarship or the potential to establish a research agenda leading to scholarly publications

  • Ability to utilize technology to support teaching and to teach online courses

  • Commitment to metropolitan and school/community engagement

  • Excellent oral and written skills
