The Taubman College doctorate in architecture was the first program of its kind in the United States when it was established in 1969, one year after the urban and regional planning department began a PhD program at Michigan. Since then, the program has graduated specialists in building technology, history, theory, and design studies. In response to changes in the nature of advanced research, in our faculty, and across the university, we are now reimagining our doctoral degree. We seek to hire a dynamic faculty colleague with a record of scholarly distinction and field leadership to join us in shaping the future of doctoral research as degree director.
We seek a faculty member suitable for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure to join the faculty and assume a three-year renewable term as degree director. The ideal candidate is committed to ongoing research and research leadership as well as to teaching at undergraduate, graduate professional, and doctoral levels. They should possess a PhD in architecture or a closely related field and a record of high scholarly achievement and impact. We seek excellence in a primary research area combined with the ability to engage productively with related areas such as technology, computation, history, theory, design, urbanism and urban humanities, and planning. We value activist approaches to advanced research and scholarship in architecture.
