Job Summary

The College of Engineering is seeking an enthusiastic curricular design and assessment specialist to help drive adoption of Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality (AMVR)  in order to enhance engineering education.  AMVR has the potential to revolutionize education in science and technology fields allowing learners to visualize and manipulate three dimensional objects. This work directly supports the long-term goal of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education to support academic innovation, and the College’s mission to “introduce new pedagogical methods & advanced tools for the delivery of preeminent engineering education.” These technologies are still very new therefore the barrier to create learning materials using them is very high.


This is a new position with the specialist reporting to the director of the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching in Engineering and being located in the University of Michigan Duderstadt Center - a hub for collaborative work on North Campus.  The  successful candidate will be able to work with a team of technologists and engaged faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate AMVR related pedagogical activities for use in both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist with identifying promising uses of AMVR for promoting student learning in courses and other venues.
  • Support the integration of AMVR technologies into instruction in pedagogically appropriate ways that support the learning goals of instructors.
  • Assist in the implementation of AMVR solutions.
  • Stay abreast of research showing effectiveness of AMVR technology in instructional settings.
  • Work closely and collaborate with technology experts in the College and across campus to promote the use of available tools as well as develop or procure new AMVR technologies in support of instruction.
  • Train and support instructors in their use of AMVR technologies and troubleshoot problems.
  • Provide workshops on topics which advance the adoption of AMVR in the College.
  • Carry out assessments to measure the impact of AMVR on student learning and engagement and identify best practices for using AMVR.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Education.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating technology into a course.
  • Experience with assessment of technology integration.
  • Ability to work with multiple courses to develop material simultaneously.
  • Experience modifying instructional activities to support  the success of learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work across and successfully coordinate activities with multiple units.  

Desired Qualifications*

  • PhD in Engineering or Education.
  • Experience working with AMVR technologies.

NOTE:  This is a 3 year position with the possibility of renewal pending funding.
