- A cover letter addressing
- a ranked list of your preferences from the courses below,
- interest and qualifications for the course(s) you wish to teach, and
- the section times you would be available
- A resume or curriculum vita
- Unofficial UM transcript
- Previous UM teaching evaluations, as applicable
Completed applications will be due by Tuesday, November 20, 2018.
The Philosophy Department is looking to hire up to 9 GSIs in the Winter 2019 term to lead discussion sections for faculty-led lectures in the following courses:
- PHIL 101 (Introduction to Philosophy), up to 4 sections
- PHIL 262 (Introduction to Religion), up to 2 sections
- PHIL 340 (Minds and Machines), up to 4 sections
- PHIL 355 (Contemporary Moral Problems), up to 6 sections
- PHIL 359 (Law and Philosophy), up to 4 sections
- Attend all lectures and exams for your preferred course (see links above for lecture schedules; exam times TBD)
- Run two or three discussion sections (times TBD from list of scheduled sections; see links above)
- Hold at least 2 hours of office hours each week
- Grading of assignments, per lead faculty instruction
- Additional items listed in fraction calculation form
- Enrolled in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan
- Available to teach at least two of the scheduled section times
- Completed basic courses, or have experience, in Philosophy or a closely related field
- If the language of instruction at a student’s undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.
- Previous experience teaching courses in philosophy
- Previous experience as a GSI with favorable student evaluations
- Have previously taken these courses or equivalent courses, and have demonstrated expertise and interest in subject area

Decision Making Process
The course instructor will make the hiring decisions in consultation with the Department Chair. Offers will be extended by Monday, December 3.
Applications are reviewed, and decisions made, based on each applicant’s knowledge, experience, and past teaching record. Preferential consideration will be given to applicants:
- from the Philosophy Department’s PhD program to whom a GSI position has been promised as part of a financial package
- with relevant academic preparation for teaching the course material
- with previous experience teaching courses in Philosophy
- whose field of study has relevance to Philosophy
