Job Summary

The Hospital Section of the Department of Psychiatry is seeking an Advanced Practice Professional (PA or NP) to do direct patient care under the immediate supervision of a psychiatry faculty member primarily in the adult psychiatric partial hospital program (PHP), with additional duties occasionally on the adult inpatient unit (9C), the consultation/liaison service (C/L service), Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), and an outpatient bridging clinic. 

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities for the Adult Psychiatry Partial Hospital Program (primary service):

  • Assist with program development.
  • Assist with plans of transitions of care to and from the PHP.
  • Perform initial and follow-up assessments on patients referred to and within the program.
  • Act as the primary provider for the PHP and collaborate with the faculty psychiatrist as appropriate.

Responsibilities on 9C (when assigned):

  • Perform initial assessments and present findings to the faculty psychiatrist.
  • Write admission H&Ps.
  • Conduct daily rounds on continuing stay patients and write appropriate orders.
  • Write daily progress notes. 
  • Monitor medical tests and consult other services as needed.
  • Collaborate with the faculty and multidisciplinary team on the treatment plan.
  • Participate in family meetings as needed.
  • Assist with transitions of care to and from 9C.

Responsibilities on the Consultation/Liaison service (when assigned):

  • Perform initial assessments on medical-surgical patients for whom psychiatry consultations are sought and present findings to the faculty psychiatrist.
  • Write consultation notes.
  • See follow-up patients and write continuing consultation notes as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the faculty and multidisciplinary team on the C/L service.
  • Contribute to the ongoing educational efforts of psychiatry to the medical-surgical services regarding common mental health issues.

Responsibilities in Psychiatric Emergency Services (when assigned):

  • Perform initial assessments on patients in PES and present findings to the faculty psychiatrist.
  • Write evaluation notes.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to make appropriate disposition plans for patients.
  • Educate patients and families as indicated.
  • Assist with transitions of care from PES.

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (NP):

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Minimum of (3) three years experience as a RN/NP in a psychiatric setting.
  • Experience leading psychotherapy groups in high acuity patients.
  • Experience developing and using standardized metrics / implementation of measurement based care surveys, preferably within an electronic medical record.
  • Experience with crisis de-escalation techniques in agitated patients.

Required Qualifications (PA):

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum of (3) three years patient care experience in a psychiatric setting.
  • Experience leading psychotherapy groups in high acuity patients.
  • Experience developing and using standardized metrics / implementation of measurement based care surveys, preferably within an electronic medical record.
  • Experience with crisis de-escalation techniques in agitated patients.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to convey patient stories and acuity through written notes.
  • Excellent teaching abilities suitable for multiple audiences (patient, peer, faculty, staff).
  • Familiarity with dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and experience working with patients on this treatment modality.
  • Experience leading psychotherapy groups in high acuity patients.
  • Experience developing and using standardized metrics / implementation of measurement based care surveys, preferably within an electronic medical record.
  • Experience with crisis de-escalation techniques in agitated patients.
  • Experience in quality improvement and/or program development.

 

Work Schedule

Hours:  40 hours per week 

Day Shift, Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm
