This course is a thorough examination of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust in the Netherlands and beyond through the careful analysis of the Diary of Anne Frank, its film, stage and television adaptations, and related materials. It tells the story and legacy of the Diary in a country that lost around 75% of its Jewish population in the Holocaust, second only to Poland. The course looks to Dutch history and society to explain the devastating number, examines its effects, and asks how we can recognize and combat racism and persecution today. Topics include Jewish migration, Jewish Amsterdam, bystanders, resistance movement and rescuers, Holocaust denial, and controversial issues such as the fictionalization of Anne Frank and alleged Holocaust exploitation. Assigned reading forms the basis for daily writing and critical in-class discussion, and prepares students for writing graded research papers.
- Mediate Classroom Discussions (alongside instructor).
- Model the use of the Diary of Anne Frank on four special class days.
- Attend field trip to the Holocaust Memorial Center and guide and debrief with students (alongside instructor)
- Grade and provide feedback on two research papers from each student.
- Check 25 sets of homework assignments and enter grades on Canvas.
- Hold regular office hours to assist students throughout the course.
- Be available over email to help students in case they have any questions pertaining to the course.
- Help run Paper Writing Workshops.
- Meet regularly with the course instructor.
- Attendance at course lectures (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00-2:30 PM).
- Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan.
- No knowledge of Dutch required.
- Relevant academic preparation for teaching the course material;
- Prior GSI experience with favorable student evaluations;
- Overall positive academic performance and progress toward the degree;
- Relevant graduate training;
- Ability to work with diverse student body and with very diverse assignments;
- Willingness to develop innovative approaches in the classroom.

Decision Making Process
All applications will be submitted for review to the faculty member teaching the course. Possible interviews will take place on a rolling basis and decisions will be made by December 15, 2018. After review of applications and possible interviews, decisions will be made by the faculty member teaching the course.
