Job Summary

The University of Michigan Procurement Services is searching for a Procurement Supervisor.  This position will act as the commodity expert for the procurement of general good and services across the University, including travel & events, food & food service, athletic equipment & supplies, logistics & transportation, temporary staffing, office supplies & promotional items and use of space agreements.  This team strives to implement best-in-class supplier relationships and agreements that provide tangible benefits and value to the University.  The chosen candidate must be experienced working in a fast paced work environment where he/she must manage multiple projects concurrently.  This position will work closely with the Procurement team to evaluate strategy sourcing opportunities.

Responsibilities*

The selected candidate will:

  • Negotiate contracts for the acquisition of goods and services, as well as lead complex and detailed initiatives that are directly related to procurement.  Promote strategic activities with commodities; focusing on supplier management. 
  • Apply facilitation and leadership skills to obtain end-user participation in and support for large scope, commodity-related purchasing projects; even when dealing with challenging and complex issues.
  • Advise end-user departments in the formulation of bid specifications; facilitate and lead cross-functional task teams to garner end-user support on projects.
  • Work closely with procurement leadership to develop and implement procurement initiatives that improve procurement processes, increase contract compliance, and reduce purchase and invoice transactions.  Analyze commodity spend to identify industry and/or procurement trends.
  • Identify potential strategic suppliers and lead initiatives to negotiate formal contracts.  Facilitate advisory teams to prioritize opportunities when selecting strategic suppliers. 
  • Effectively communicate all contractual requirements and procurement procedures to University faculty, staff and external suppliers. 
  • Supervise the buying team assigned to source general good and services.  Work collaboratively with team members to promote a positive and professional work environment.
  • Promote and participate in diversity supplier development initiatives related to assigned commodity and Socially Responsible Purchasing initiatives. 

Required Qualifications*

Strong candidates will have prior purchasing experience with a concentration of skills in leading sourcing projects, the negotiation of contract terms and conditions as well as in supplier management, development of RFP/RFQ specifications.  In addition, the chosen candidate will have proven experience in leadership and supervision of people.

Additionally, this position requires: a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management or related field or equivalent experience; 5 - 8 years relevant progressive procurement experience; strong contracting and negotiation skills; excellent customer service and communication skills in both written and verbal formats; organized, and ability to follow through with commitments, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and diplomatically with all levels of an organization.  Ability to use the Microsoft Office and Google suites and other hardware/software as needed. The chosen candidate will possess strong analytical and organizational skills.

This role demands the ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects simultaneously, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to make decisions within stated scope.
