A position for a Research Laboratory Specialist in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan. This vascular biology laboratory studies the processes leading to the development of deep vein thrombosis, and vein graft disease. We seek an individual with a strong background in rodent surgical techniques to perform a variety of surgical procedures.
Duties include but are not limited to:
1) Rodent survival surgery, drug administration and monitoring;
2) ability to process in vivo samples for RNA / protein isolation and standard modern molecular biology assays;
3) the ability to maintain detailed and accurate records of experiments;
4) ability to input and analyze data using common laboratory software programs for PC-based computers; and
5) attend scheduled laboratory meetings.
A bachelor's degree in a health science discipline is required. A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment, and willingness to learn new techniques is required. The flexibility to be able to monitor experiments over some weekends. Requires the academic knowledge of a health science discipline such as microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy, or pathology, plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge. This is generally associated with a Bachelor’s degree, supplemented by one or more years of progressively responsible experience in the conduct of laboratory health science research, or an equivalent combination of health science education and experience. One to two years of experience with rodent surgical techniques, molecular biology skills, and a history of compliance with IACUC protocols are required.
Intermediate level: 4-5 years of experience in a related field
Associate level: 1-3 years of experience in a related field
A background in vascular biology or cardiovascular disease is preferred, but not required. Experience with common computer programs including Excel, Photoshop, GraphPad Prizm is preferred.
