Job Summary

The Employee Communication Manager will join the Department of Communication’s Employee and Leadership Communication team to promote key institutional messages and organizational news to internal faculty and staff.  The communicator will utilize print and digital mediums, including email, video, social media, digital signs, and intranet, to engage employees with intentional messaging and storytelling.   The communicator also provides counsel and support to other Michigan Medicine departments who request assistance with institutional communication to colleagues and staff members.  Successful candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, innovative and independent thinking, understanding of effective marketing principles and a positive attitude.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop, research and write stories, profiles, news and announcements for distribution to faculty and staff.

  • Translate technical, strategic or complex topics into easily consumed, appropriate communication tailored to various internal audiences.

  • Position and reinforce Michigan Medicine as an employer of choice through select, intentional content reflecting our workplace, work environment, and working relationships with colleagues.

  • Increase employee engagement and ambassadorship by educating faculty and staff about how we differentiate our institution and how we talk about it. 

  • Manage vendors providing creative support for employee-directed initiatives.

  • Manage digital sign content and local content manager implementation across institution.

  • Leverage technology and manage projects that optimize and increase innovative communication venues to effectively reach all levels of staff.

  • Support leadership and executive positioning by determining effective ways to communicate leadership messages to all levels of staff.  

  • Collaborate with other key departments to positively impact engagement, culture, and organizational health.

  • Work with other constituents in the Department of Communication to create synergies and broader-reaching results with various target audiences.

  • Collaborate with Employee and Leadership Communication team to prioritize institutional messages based on strategic direction provided by executive leadership.

  • Track and monitor key measures of success for internal communication efforts.

Division of Responsibilities

1. Content creation: 50%

Works with internal and external stakeholders to identify and create messages and stories for internal faculty and staff.   

2. Departmental Collaboration:  10%

Collaborate with others in the Department of Communication to leverage efforts and content for internal audience.

3. Vendor Management: 10%

Manage external vendors with project management approach to successfully complete initiatives on time, in scope, and within budget while achieving excellent quality of work.

4. Support select Michigan Medicine Departments: 20%

Provide counsel and support to other Michigan Medicine constituent groups for their institutional communication efforts and goals.

5. Collaborate with team on content prioritization:10%

Work closely with Employee and Leadership Communication team to prioritize content and efficiently manage work load across team.

Required Qualifications*

Minimum of an undergraduate degree in marketing, communication, public relations, strategic communication, journalism or business communication or comparable experience required. Advanced degree preferred. At least five to seven years professional experience in marketing or communications in a professional setting. Must be comfortable in a multi-layered organization with complex relationships. Proven experience generating client satisfaction and providing solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with solid understanding of social media required.  Direct experience in a health care and/or academic medical center preferred.

Additional Information

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidates education and experience.

This job reports to the Director of Employee and Leadership Communication.
