Founded in 2011, the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) brings together multidisciplinary health services researchers to improve quality, safety, equity and affordability of health care services. IHPI is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to support the coordination and use of complex healthcare claims datasets, and to guide analytic partnerships with Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQI), IHPI center and program partners, University faculty and staff, and the IHPI Data & Methods Hub.
This position works under guidance of the Program Manager and Lead Statistician and must demonstrate the ability to work independently. This position must understand both database and research complexities, and apply independent problem solving that requires the application of statistical and mathematical principles for clinical and health policy problems.
This position involves a wide range of tasks including project facilitation and leadership, consulting, and partnership management supporting research based on large national healthcare claims datasets, electronic health records, and other large clinical registries.
Prepares reports and conducts analyses of cost and utilization of care to answer critical policy and clinical research questions using claims data.
Provides guidance for study design issues
Consults with research investigators in an interdisciplinary environment to develop analytic plans and optimize research products
Provides thought leadership to junior analysts and manages project progress
Exercises direct administrative supervision of junior analysts
Ensures success and feasibility of project timelines, goals, and deliverables assigned to junior analysts
Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of measurement, analysis and performance improvement to the completion of difficult assignments
Builds and maintains relationships with both internal and external IHPI partners including, but not limited to, Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQI), research centers, and individual investigators.
Implements processes to ensure data quality and accurate reporting of key metrics and measures
Performs power calculations and estimates sample size
Supports PIs and others in development of specific analysis plans
Summarizes, interprets, and presents results
Assists in the writing of manuscripts and grant proposals
Participates as a team member in discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming, and documentation.
Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, biostatistics, computer science, information, public health, public policy, or related field.
Experience with SAS/STATA/R.
High-level statistical background and programming knowledge.
Ability to be consistently and extremely detail-oriented.
Working knowledge of health services research methodology.
Experience with complex data structures and linkages between data sources.
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Proven ability to summarize methodologic approaches and describe actionable and interpretable recommendations from research findings. Excellent communication, both oral and written in the English language, and interpersonal skills are essential.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time.
Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple researchers.
Direct experience in supporting, managing and analyzing major research projects using large administrative datasets such as Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance is preferred.
Conversant or some knowledge of any of the following methodologies: Logistic and OLS regression, propensity score matching or weighting, interrupted time series, difference-in-difference analysis, survival models, and cluster analysis.
Experience using insurance claims data for price standardization
Prior research publications in statistical or medical journals
