Job Summary

The College of Engineering and Computer Science, office of Extended Learning & Outreach has an opportunity for an undergraduate student to serve as a STEM Near Peer Coach for 5th through 12th grade students at the Jefferson-Barns Community Vitality Center, 32150 Dorsey, Westland, Michigan. 

UM-Dearborn student Near Peer Coaches will assist lab instructors and coach students to build relationships that offer guidance, support, and encouragement to nurture positive and healthy development / self esteem.

Candidates will be required to interview with Jefferson Barns program director and UM-Dearborn outreach staff.

This after school program runs Mondays through Thursdays during the Wayne Westland Community School District's academic year.

Responsibilities*

Student Near Peer Coaches will work with 5th through 12th grade students in a self-paced, open computer laboratory environment to: 

  • Cooperate with lead teacher to deliver lessons and assist students as needed
  • Offer tutoring and homework assistance
  • Assist students in developing computer skills, particularly coding
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy and understanding in interactions with students
  • Develop a genuine and personal relationship with at least one student who attends regularly
  • Act as a role model demonstrating that academic success is achievable in STEM fields
  • Understand that each positive interaction has potential to make a significant difference and pay off down the road in ways we can't anticipate.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning and problem solving
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with lab equipment
  • Engage with parents and visitors in the lab
  • Assist staff in organization of lab space and maintaining inventory.

Required Qualifications*

Candidate must be a current CECS undergraduate student at the sophomore, junior or senior level and be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better. Candidate must also have knowledge of computer coding.  Candidate must possess outstanding communication skills, including English language proficiency.

Work Locations

Coaching will take place at the Jefferson-Barns Community Vitality Center, 32150 Dorsey, Westland, Michigan, Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  Coaches must have their own reliable transportation and commit to working two shifts per week through June, 2019 with a possibility of additional summer hours. Coaches will be reimbursed for mileage and parking fees.

Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks will be performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Children on Campus training and Student Near Peer Coach training is also required.
