Job Summary

The Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking a detail-oriented, self-starter to join their team. As the Data Analyst, you will conduct analyses using both (i) administrative claims data from both private and federal payers, and (ii) clinical datasets in order to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of cardiac surgical care.   You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including but not limited to the evaluation of: (i) variation in infections from ventricular assist devices to support patients with advanced heart failure, (ii) clinical outcomes for surgical treatments for aortic disease, and (iii) short and long-term expenditures for cardiac surgical treatments. Strong analytic, organizational, verbal and written communication skills are critical to this role. In this position, you will work with a highly integrative group of clinicians, policy experts, biostatisticians, economists, health services researchers and analysts. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain expertise in new analytical skills (e.g., conferences) as well as a broad range of reimbursement and payment reform programs as well as to advance your skills using claims data.

Responsibilities*

As the Data Analyst, you will play a critical role in the following areas:

  • Preparation of analytical reports and narrative descriptions of results for manuscripts and presentations

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Use advanced methods from multiple fields of study (biostatistics, econometrics, statistical computing, epidemiology) to analyze cost and quality of cardiac surgical care.
  • Execute complex data management processes and data analyses using a variety of statistical software packages (e.g., Stata, SAS).
  • Analyze data from a variety of data sources (large administrative databases,
  • clinical registry data, survey data).
  • Manage, merge, and analyze large, complex datasets, including healthcare claims (commercial and Medicare), multiple clinical datasets (STS, INTERMACS), and other national data (AHA survey).
  • Create products of these analyses, including reports, abstracts, manuscripts and grant submissions.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of econometrics, biostatistics, and statistical computing techniques; stay up-to-date with emerging methods and implementation of methods.
  • Communicate statistical concepts clearly, both in writing (methods sections, reports, emails) and verbally in-person (meetings, presentations). Effectively translate between research questions and statistical concepts/implementation.
  • Routinely recommend approaches and changes to statistical analyses and author methods sections for publications, presentations and reports.
  • Provide methods and analytic supervision of research assistants and project managers. Direct and advise on the conduct of statistical projects, including analytic plans, sample selection, statistical computing, statistical modeling and testing, data presentation, and dissemination.
  • Provide training, supervision and consultation for other IHPI analysts (including instructional documents, formal presentation to IHPI analysts, ad-hoc consultations). Also provide ad-hoc consultation on SAS and Stata programming, statistical techniques (eg reliability adjustment, generalized estimating equations, generalized linear mixed models), and healthcare claims data.
  • Demonstrate understanding of context of analyses (medical terminology, knowledge of billing practices, processes of care, etc.)
  • Understand complex data structures and linkages between data sources.
  • Participate in activities related to data quality, integrity, analysis, documentation, and reporting (e.g., compliance).
  • Investigate use of additional data sources that provide value to research objectives.
  • Evaluate quality of data, interpret findings and prepare materials suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Recommend data presentation methods (chart and plot types, use of tables vs. figures, etc.) and use multiple software packages (e.g., Excel, SAS, Stata) to prepare reports and charts for publication.
  • Understand and optimize the data structure and variable definitions from a diverse set of data sources (e.g., CMS data, survey data, clinical registry).
  • Manage linked data sets to ensure compliance with federal regulations, privacy constraints, data use agreements, and data storage priorities.
  • Collaborate with project leads and other analysts to understand and adapt data sources to meet project requirements.
  • Advise and supervise graduate student(s) and surgical research fellows, as necessary, in the structure and analytic approaches to clinical and economic data.

 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with large datasets using statistical software programs (SAS preferred, but STATA, SPSS, and R are acceptable)

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field and 3-5 years of experience in a professional healthcare-related setting
  • Previous experience working with administrative claims data
  • Working familiarity with basic statistical models and significance testing, including linear and logistic regression, and hierarchical models
