The laboratory is part of a large Diabetes and Obesity Research Center at the University of Michigan with excellent long-term career development opportunities.
The work will require executing tasks under direction as well as independently, assisting research staff, interacting with staff from other laboratories and training new research staff and students, as necessary.
Prepare and oversee stocks of general-use solutions for the laboratory. Help to oversee and maintain condition and cleanliness of the lab, including instrument maintenance- coordinate service when necessary.
The work will require executing research laboratory tasks, keeping detailed records of the work performed, analyzing data and generating graphical representation of the data.
Data will be stored on dedicated computer spreadsheets and databases.
The work will include independently maintaining a mouse colony, including breeding, designing breeding strategies, tagging, tailing, and PCR based genotyping. Work will include metabolic testing in laboratory mice.
Assist other lab members in large complex experiments and work in a team spirit.
The teamwork will include sample processing and data collection and data management.
and maintaining detailed laboratory documentation for experimental analysis.
Participating in laboratory meetings. Depending on experience and motivation, individual research projects may be conducted by the successful applicant.
Research Lab Tech Intermediate requirements
The position requires a minimum of a Associate’s degree and 1-3 years experience in research laboratory work. Candidates should have experience with molecular biology techniques (PCR, Western-immunoblot, gel imaging - preferred) and be comfortable working with mice, cell culture systems and microscopy.
Superior organizational, time-management and multitasking skills are required as well as proficiency in using standard computer software (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Filemaker, Prism GraphPad). A keen interest in using modern technology and willing to learn to work with new technical devices are highly desirable. Technical skills related to the use of modern laboratory equipment (microscopes, plate readers etc.) will be an asset.
The position is a full time position for a young and energetic individual (Full-time; 8-9 hours starting at approximately 8:30 am/9am). Biological research requires flexibility in hours and extra work hours as required by the particular work/experiments.
Occasional weekend work may be required based on the ongoing experimental requirements.
Teamwork will be necessary and flexibility in your schedule to accommodate the needs of the work and the team will be required
