Job Summary

The Office of University Audits seeks an outstanding Associate Director to lead all internal audit activity related to the University of Michigan Academic Medical Center (Michigan Medicine).  The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Director, University Audits. Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Develop and execute an annual risk-based internal audit plan for Michigan Medicine.  Focus audit resources on the key risks, clinical and business processes, policies and procedures, governance practices, and compliance and regulatory requirements applicable to Michigan Medicine.
  • Direct and oversee the work of a team of four healthcare auditors.   Manage and mentor staff by providing encouragement, perspective, challenging assignments, and meaningful performance feedback.
  • Assess changes in the environment and identify opportunities to enhance the value of audit services, including the formulation and championing of strategic initiatives.
  • Rigorously evaluate audit results from the perspective of operational and clinical management. Ensure reports document findings and opportunities, are revised when warranted, and are understood and actionable. Conduct internal investigations, as requested. Exercise sound judgment in identifying information that warrants escalation to higher levels of the organization
  • Establish and maintain an extensive network of professional contacts across the university, Michigan Medicine, and with external peers to keep informed of changes occurring within the institution and of emerging industry trends.
  • Assist the Executive Director in preparing the annual audit plan, and preparing and monitoring departmental budget and expenditures.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree, generally in business, healthcare, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Healthcare audit experience
  • At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience, including at least five (5) years of internal audit experience
  • Healthcare audit experience
  • Experience managing people, including, developing, evaluating, and mentoring
  • Professional certification in a related area, such as: CIA, CPA, CHA, CPMA, and CISA
  • Knowledge of auditing principles, techniques, and Institute of Internal Auditing Standards
  • Effective project management skills
  • Ability to effectively work with all organization levels on complex issues
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and decision making
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous and sometimes stressful situations
  • Flexibility, ability to change priorities quickly, and capacity to handle multiple tasks

Desired Qualifications*

  • Academic medical center experience, including clinical, research, and academic experience
  • Master's degree
  • Experience with Epic software
  • Experience with data analytic software, such as ACL, IDEA, and Tableau
