The Assistant Director for Organization Conduct will report to the Assistant Dean of Students and Interim Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL). This position will be responsible for the review of incidents related to fraternities and sororities as well as supporting the Respondent Support Advisor program through the Dean of Students office. This position will work closely with the Fraternity & Sorority Life staff to strengthen organizational conduct procedures and execute effective reporting on relevant incidents through appropriate accountability mechanisms.

Job Summary: Assistant Director for Organization Conduct 

Responsibilities include direct operational leadership of processes under the Fraternity & Sorority Life policies including, risk management policies, policies against hazing, and Statement for Human Dignity. This also includes processes and procedures relevant to Hazing Response Team, Greek Activities Review Panel, and Social Responsibility Committee. The Assistant Director will be responsible for leading out unit efforts to support and advance collaborative partnerships focused on student accountability. Additionally, this position will be responsible for supporting the Assistant Dean of Students in managing the Respondent Support Advisor program. Including on the education on the Policy and Procedures on Student Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct and other forms of Interpersonal Violence (the Policy), coordination of training for Respondent Support Advisor team, operational logistics of pairing respondents with advisors.

The role places a high priority on the innovation and delivery of adaptable, educational and restorative responses to behaviors involving high-risk alcohol consumption, other drug use, and other behaviors associated with the use of alcohol and/or drugs. This role is tasked with providing a bridge, along with the council advisors, to ensure coordinated and efficient response between the FSL and relevant stakeholders as well as supporting respondents to understand the Policy and campus resources.

This position promotes FSL and Student Life learning outcomes, furthers student learning and development through outreach, provides leadership for FSL program management & conflict resolution services, and may provide supervision of graduate, student paraprofessional staff, and volunteers. Responsibilities include education

and outreach, high profile case management, and interdepartmental coordination. This position provides an FSL point of contact (liaison) for key partners that include the Dean of Students Office, Wolverine Wellness, University Housing and Residential Education, University of Michigan Police Department, and Ann Arbor Police Department. This position also ensures the effective coordination of training for professional staff, paraprofessional student staff, and external partners (such as resolution officers/arbiters, chapter accountability boards, etc.). This position provides assistance to the council advisors and Assistant Dean for ensuring effective policy update cycles regularly, production of an annual organization misconduct report, collaboration on FSL annual report, Title IX (Responsible Employee) and CLERY reporting.

This position requires the utilization of specialized knowledge of higher education administration, wellness models, alcohol and other drug education, conflict resolution strategies, restorative and social justice best practices, innovative educational outreach, student development theory and practice, and related content areas to achieve the office mission.


Administration of Relevant Policy, Procedures, and Related Processes (60%)

? Exercise leadership in the coordination of processes under the relevant laws and policies.

? Provides direct leadership in the management and development of the FSL Incident database.

? Work with highly sensitive, protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain student confidentiality and attend to institutional risk-management concerns.

? Manage and monitor organization cases utilizing processes in FSL and Center for Campus Involvement.

? Manage Respondent Support cases including the coordination of Respondent Support Advisor team.

? Recommend, develop, and implement policies, procedures, program(s) and service(s) that allow organization members to develop knowledge of self and others (particularly with regard to developing lifelong ethical, relational, and conflict resolution-related skills), navigate their educational environment to achieve their desired outcomes, and evaluate the role they wish to play as contributing members of society in a multicultural world.

? Manage continuous improvement in processes by systematically using data to inform leadership decisions (includes data gathering, best practice benchmarking, and program assessment).

? Effectively utilize Advocate and Access databases to ensure accurate records and statistical information on students/organizations and programs.

? Utilize relevant theory, literature, research, and best practices to facilitate conflict resolution and in the design, development, and implementation of various trainings and services.

? Consult with a broad cross-section of institutional and community stakeholders regarding student organization conflict issues at-large and specific student situations.

? Educate and assist students to reflect on their personal and ethical values and in making informed decisions about their conduct.

? Comply with and educate others on regulations and laws related to the work of FSL, including FERPA, Clery, Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, Title IX, VAWA, etc. This includes several UM Standard Practice Guides (Policy), such as the SPG on Alcohol and Other Drugs, Weapons Possession, and Discrimination and Harassment, among others.

? Promote the highest standards of the profession in accordance with the principles, ethics, standards, and best practices of AFA, ASCA, ACPA, NASPA, and CAS.

? Lead and serve on committees and task forces within the unit and represent the unit on Division-level or other committees, as requested.

Leadership and Supervision (20%)

? FSL Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Dean and Interim Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

? Provides direct supervision to the Hazing Response Team including all onboarding, training, logistics, and report coordination.

? In coordination with Assistant Dean, lead efforts in effective case delegation management for processes under governing policies.

? Provides leadership for the coordination of annual Hazing Response Team, and Social Responsibility Committee training.

? Support Assistant Dean in the coordination of training and evaluation of Respondent Support Advisor program.

? Support Respondent Support Advisor team members in matching and advisor support.

? May provide supervision for one graduate intern for FSL.

? Provides coordinated, team-based, and cross-unit leadership in the advancement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives at the Unit and Divisional Level.

? In coordination with the Director and Associate Director, may act as leadership designee in periods of absence.

Outreach and Assessment (10%)

? Provides unit representation for divisional and community initiatives related to wellness and harm reduction.

? Analysis of high-risk alcohol data, organizational misconduct including Greek Activities Review Panel (GARP), Social Responsibility Committee (SRC), and Michigan Ambassador Program (MAP) violations and production of reports for the Assistant Dean of Students.

? Develop qualitative assessment of Respondent Support Advisor program.

Unit and Divisional Committee Work (10%)

? Advance the mission and goals of FSL and the Division of Student Life within an established set of organizational values.

? Lead and serve on committees and task forces both within FSL and in the Division of Student Life, as requested.

? Actively participate in the profession at local, regional, and/or national level. Including, committee work, conference presentations, and contributing to the knowledge base of the fields of fraternity and sorority life and student conduct and conflict resolution.

Other duties as assigned by Assistant Dean and Interim Director.

Required Qualifications*

  • ? Master's degree or higher in a relevant field of study.

    ? Three plus years of professional-level experience related to the position.

    ? Experience working with college students in areas relevant to the FSL Assistant Director role and key responsibilities within a Higher Education environment.

    ? Experience working with students accused of misconduct.

    ? Familiarity with computers and software.

Desired Qualifications*

  • ? Familiarity for conduct database systems; particularly the Symplicity Advocate conduct software package.

    ? Experience designing and implementing assessment efforts to inform key leadership decision-making

    ? Knowledge of and experience in fraternity and sorority life, organization conduct, student conduct, or a related field within student affairs. Demonstrated commitment to educationally focused conflict resolution techniques and programs.

    ? Evidence of having contributed to the field, through publications, presentations, professional involvement, and/or leadership roles in professional organizations.

Working conditions

Require some evening or weekend hours. Position requires substantial competency in conflict resolution, working with students, parents, attorneys, etc., through challenging/stressful situations and circumstances.

Physical requirements

Requires regular administrative work in a typical office setting.

The Assistant Director for Organization Conduct and Accountability may supervise graduate, temporary and/or paraprofessional (student) staff as needed.
