Job Summary

The Community Center Manager (CCM) position is essential to the core mission of the department as it provides leadership at one or two Community Centers (CC) at the residence halls and apartments.  This work supports and maintains the positive, multicultural, and learning centered environments we foster in Housing through the lens of inclusive excellence.  The CCM supervises the paraprofessional staff at the CC, manages day to day operations, collaborates with building staff on all pertinent facility matters and leads central Housing processes (i.e. Room Sign up) to deliver an excellent residential experience for all students.  Responsible for the Community Center operational budget averaging $4,500 per CC.



40% Administration:

Manage the Community Center overseeing all aspects of the CC staff schedule and operations to include coordinating financial operations including budget reconciliation and student billing, using M-Pathways systems; managing room and building access, security practices, assessing charges as appropriate and processing documentation for an electronic access system for 600 to 1500 student rooms; establishing procedures and coordinating mail and package distribution, managing communications related to Housing procedures such as room changes, the student housing sign-up processes, solicitation requests, distribution of postings, and room reservations. Share leadership with Hall Directors for the implementation of the move-in and move-out processes including projected withdrawals and extended stay requests. Participate in building, department, and university-wide meetings and committees. Collaborate in the overall management of student residences that houses 800-2300 residents with an operational team that consists of staff related to facilities, housing information, conferences, security staff (and other building specific staff – e.g. living-learning communities) and responsible for coordinating regular and consistent meetings with this staff. Facilitate the development of a working team with other departments within Housing, including Facilities, Residential Dining, Housing Security, and Michigan Learning Communities. Actively develop liaison relationships with other units across Student Life.  Coordinate communications of a confidential nature to various entities as necessary and required.  Coordinate services to enhance the student experience in this twelve month operation.


35% Supervision:

Create a vision for the Community Centers that assures that interactions with students who come to the CCs are intentional and support student learning and development.  Select, train, supervise, develop, evaluate and assign work, in relation to the CC, to 30-90 Residence Staff members in each residence hall or apartment community housing 800-2300 residents. Provide a full range of student staff performance management functions in relation to the CC. Establish and facilitate on-going staff training that focuses intentionally on individual and staff group development, involving team building, quality service principles, communication, crisis response, community facilitation skill building, and professional development activities. Plan and co-facilitate staff meetings. Receives supervision from an Assistant Director.


25% Student Development Education:

Work with a 1-4 person Residence Education Leadership Team to facilitate community building in a way that creates and maintains a positive, multicultural, student learner-centered environment embracing the community development model.  Assess student needs and design intentional initiatives to address those needs.  Take lead in identifying student and staff needs in relation to other Operations Team members, such as facilities, security, and dining staff and other units within Student Life.  Promote the use of the community center to the Operations Team members and Student Life as an entity to reach students and staff.  Partner with these colleagues in providing intentional programming to enhance the residential experience.  Create and maintain a specific plan for direct student contact and relationship building.  Foster an atmosphere of respect for individual growth and support community engagement values, encouraging safety and security. Serve as a resource to students in ways that positively enhance their learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. Refer students to appropriate University and community resources related to questions that may be both personal and academic in nature. Meet with individual students regarding personal and community concerns and Housing procedures including move out and room sign-up. May advise Housing student leadership groups. Communicate and explain University policy and procedures including the Community Living Standards and the Housing Student Conflict Resolution process. Advance the departmental values of social justice education and restorative justice principles throughout interactions.

Required Qualifications*

•Bachelor’s Degree is required. 
•Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. 
•Ability to work in a fast paced environment that often requires multitasking skills is necessary.
•Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as part of a larger team is necessary. 
•Administrative and supervisory abilities including budgeting, and working with diverse student populations, and highly developed organizational skills with attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications*

• 2 years of supervisory experience. 
• Experience facilitating community building in a multicultural, student learner-centered environment is highly preferred.
• Success working with a diverse undergraduate student population.
• A commitment to social justice.
• The ability to multi-task in the face of competing demands

  • The ability to be a consensus builder and make decisions in a timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral, in working with diverse populations of students and staff
  • The ability to maintain open dialogue with students and staff as well as the ability to nurture an atmosphere of collegiality, inclusiveness, shared responsibility and collective accomplishment.

Working conditions

Some evenings and weekends are required.
Salary:  12 months/$35,000.

Physical requirements

Be able to move and transport items of up to 30 pounds.

Direct reports

The Community Center Manager directly supervises up to 14 student staff and works to select, train, supervise, develop, evaluate and assign work, in relation to the Community Center up to 90 Student Staff.
