Job Summary

The University of Michigan Department of Environment, Healh & Safety is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Tech I to provide Safety and Industrial Hygiene services to University of Michigan organizational units.

Responsibilities*

Provide Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety Services to University of Michigan organizational units, which includes Skilled Trades and AFSCME staff.  The work will be managed by professional health and safety staff and will include participation in audits, air and noise surveys, data collection and report generation. Provide technical and safety-related support to departments to assure regulatory compliance. Review of equipment lock out/tag out procedures and other health and safety issues as directed.

Required Qualifications*

  • A high school diploma is necessary.
  • Supplemental education (Bachelor’s degree) in occupational health, safety or related engineering field is highly desired.
  • Some experience in occupational health, safety or related engineering field is desired.
  • Reasonable knowledge of safety-related operational procedures and the ability to understand and apply MIOSHA and OSHA regulations is necessary.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise initiative and appropriate judgement, and provide follow through with customers.
  • Possess good customer service skills and prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Communication competencies, including excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deliver employee training programs.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office computer applications, including database experience.
  • Must be able to pass physical examinations to allow for emergency response and wearing personal protective equipment (ppe).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Work Schedule

M-F day shift hours. Additional off-shift work hours may occasionally be required to conduct assessments, employee training, gather data from off-shift employees, or respond to emergencies or other time sensitive/critical events.
