Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator and/or laboratory manager, provides routine technical support to manage a zebrafish colony that houses over 10,000 fish for the study of the genetics of blood clotting disorders and porphyria
- Management of zebrafish colony including daily feeding of fish, maintaining a brine shrimp hatchery and rotifers, monitoring and maintaining water quality, maintaining records, collecting embryos and providing care to pediatric fish (50%)
- Maintain fish facility in a clean and orderly manner in compliance with EHS and ACUO and IACUC university requirements, cleaning fish tanks and tank parts, standardizing probes for pH and conductivity, changing filters, maintaining and/or troubleshooting pumps and associated equipment (30%)
- Breed fish to maintain transgenic and wild type lines
- Screen transgenic embryos using fluorescent microscopy (14%)
- Manage the activities of 1-4 undergraduate employees
- Participate in laboratory meetings
- Provide technical support according to the overall project goals as developed by Principal Investigator (6%)
- Responsible, reliable and trustworthy individual with excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Must demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Show initiative and ability to learn new skills or techniques
- Must be able to work weekends and respond to system alarms as needed
- Prior aquatic or zebrafish husbandry experience
- Must be able to lift water filled tanks, filter bags and carbon containers that span a weight range of 10-60 lbs. on a routine basis
- Excellent attendance, ability to prioritize appropriately and exercise good judgement
- One-year experience in a research setting relevant to the position
- Experience with troubleshooting plumbing, pumps and water quality controllers
- Familiarity with University/Michigan Medicine research administration, systems, policies and/or procedures
