Job Summary

The Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time programmer/analyst. The programmer will work on projects using large administrative databases, including but not limited to health insurance claims, electronic medical records, and national surveys. The core duties of this position are to design and construct analytic datasets from existing complex administrative and survey datasets, and to perform and support advanced statistical analyses. The position will work closely with a small group of experienced faculty members, and requires both independence and team collaboration over diverse projects. Projects will focus on a broad range of topics relevant to child health and health care, allowing the programmer to gain expertise in a variety of topic areas and datasets. This position will be for a minimum of two years with the possibility of extension depending on performance. Responsibilities*

The Research Analyst will work closely with faculty, biostatisticians, other research analysts, and database administrators to:

  • Understand research project and proposal designs and requirements
  • Write, test and implement programs based on the analytic design of the project or proposal using SAS, STATA, or R to clean, manage, merge, and analyze large and complex data
  • Develop statistical analyses for presentation and discussion with the principal investigator and others, including but not limited to regression modeling, model diagnostics, multiple imputation, propensity score matching, multi-level models, causal inference technique (e.g., instrumental variables, difference-in-difference analysis)
  • Contribute to study reports by preparing tables, graphs and other data displays
  • Create and maintain technical documentation
  • Contribute to the development of methods to evaluate progress of data collection on new projects
  • Participate as a team member in discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming and documentation
  • Participate as a co-author in preparing and submitted manuscripts to medical journals

Successfully performing these duties will require:

  • Contributing intellectually to the development of research plans as part of a team
  • Reshaping and combining large data files to support multiple analytic approaches (50%)
  • Organizing, maintaining and documenting analytic datasets and file systems for several projects (20%)
  • Carrying out statistical analysis in consultation with faculty (20%)
  • Presenting research findings and assisting in the preparation of manuscripts and grants (10%)
  • Independently acting as a resource and problem-solver as needed

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in public health, biostatistics, statistics, economics, or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Experience with health services research design and data analysis, including use of administrative data
  • Demonstrated excellence in the use of SAS (preferred), STATA, and/or R to manage, merge and manipulate large datasets
  • Demonstrated professional, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and organize multiple projects at the same time

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with SQL
  • Familiarity with medical terminology
  • Experience with NIH grant preparation and submission

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday (40 hours/week)
