The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is a multi-disciplinary research institute at the University of Michigan, strategically located as a bridge between the medical campus and the central-campus schools and colleges. The University of Michigan is seeking a Cryo-EM specialist to assist in the daily operation of a well-established, state-of-the-art Electron Microscopy Facility. This facility houses a Titan Krios and Talos Arctica, each equipped with K2 Summit direct detector and a Glacios equipped with a Falcon3 direct detector. It also includes a Technai T12 dedicated for negative stain image collection, and Morgagni for negative stain sample screening. The Cryo-EM specialist will mainly be responsible for training users, vitrifying samples, loading grids, and taking images on the 200 kV Glacios and will work closely with the facility directors in order to perform tasks within demanding deadlines and ensure accurate logs.
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
- Monitor and assist maintaining electron microscopes and related peripheral equipment
- Coordinating and reporting equipment problems to the OEM and facility users
- Prepare sample grids for negative stain and Cryo-EM imaging
- Collect data on the electron microscopes using automated image acquisition software tools
- Train users in grid preparation and data collection
- Provide consultation for researchers to improve data acquisition
- Establish and improve equipment operation protocols
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related field
- Knowledge of principles of transmission electron microscopy
- Understanding of single particle approach, Cryo electron tomography is a plus
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills with a strong customer service focus and demonstrated commitment to creating a positive work environment.
- Highly organized, attentive to detail and accuracy, and strong record-keeping skills are essential.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with diverse groups of faculty, staff and students.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently.
- Experience in providing instruction/training to others.
- Proven ability to adapt as priorities shift.
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, multi-task, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines, and display excellent judgment while operating in a flexible and professional manner.
- Master’s in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related field
- Hands-on experience in Cryo-EM
- Prior experience working in an academic research setting
