Job Summary

The Natural Areas Guide position involves leading environmental education programs for school children within the University of Michigan-Dearborn Environmental Study Area.  Programs are predominantly outdoors leading groups of 8-15 children for experiential education activities in the natural sciences.  Some program planning and preparation activities are also required.  Training will be provided by regular program staff.


  • Prepare program content and materials for environmental education experience with program staff
  • Lead small groups of school children (ages 5-16 year old) in outdoor investigation and learning
  • Ensure safety of program attendees
  • Deliver quality program content in interesting and engaging activities
  • Support other program staff to meet group responsibilities
  • Follow-up with program review and self-directed learning to enhance future activities

Required Qualifications*

  • Interest or experience in natural sciences and/or education
  • Ability to effectively communicate with small groups
  • Enthusiastic in working with children ages 5-16 years old
  • Comfortable working in sometimes challenging outdoor conditions
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Candidates will agree to a criminal background check

  • Knowledge of local flora and fauna
  • Curious about local plants, animals, natural history and environmental issues
  • Ability and interest in self-directed learning of subject matter
  • Available for work in the morning at least two weekdays
