Job Summary

This position is for a driven pharmacy technician that will work within a team of pharmacist and technicians to manage, optimize, and implement different pharmacy systems throughout the University of Michigan Health System.  Daily activities will include, but not limited to, adjusting setting within various pharmacy automation systems to offer functionality to all end users, interacting with end users to adjust settings with multiple databases, and work with other pharmacy team members to fix and optimize pharmacy automation systems throughout the organization.  Systems include BD suite of pharmacy automation, DoseEdge,Omnicell, KitChek, and others as new technology is implemented.

Responsibilities*

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To perform activities relating to or supporting the preparation, compounding, packaging, storing, recording, processing, dispensing, labeling and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies and may collect and or/record metric, quality and/or surveillance data under the supervision of a pharmacist.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential:

Pharmacy Technician Senior will have attained mastery in multiple roles within the pharmacy, mentoring and training new staff and students, and to assist with problem solving and process improvements. The Pharmacy Technician Senior will also assist in the development of new work processes; participate as active members of internal work groups/committees addressing quality, cost containment and regulatory/compliance issues.

Pharmacy Technician Senior may also perform:

 

Collect and or/record metric, quality and/or surveillance data

Enter medication orders into operational software and databases

Participate in the documentation of patient care activities within the health record

Prepare sterile products, injections, and parenteral hazardous substances, and to do so potentially using automated compounding devices stock medication shelves, return excess stock to inventory

Prepare and package non-sterile compounded pharmaceuticals

Correctly distribute controlled substances

Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols

Assist with use of automated dispensing machines (RobotRx, ScriptPro, etc.)

Participate in facility environmental monitoring and other quality assurance activities

Conduct nursing unit inspections for compliance with medication standards

Resolve billing issues

Assist with management of inventory levels

Respond to telephone inquiries

Interact with internal and external customers demonstrating customer service excellence

Complete special projects and non-routine tasks as assigned

Other duties as assigned by supervisor to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications

Fill and deliver unit dose medications

Fill automated dispensing devices on nursing units

Process billing for medications

Secure prior authorizations and resolve insurance problems, as needed

Use Point-Of-Sale system to process retail sales

Handle cash according to University and department policies

 

The percentage mix of these duties will vary depending on the functional area where the employee is assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is desirable.

Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements is necessary. This includes:

A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire.

A full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.

One or more years of relevant pharmacy experience is necessary.

Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.

This position requires primary source verification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires extensive standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Pharmacy Technician Associate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.

Pharmacy Technician Intermediate: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
  • One or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Pharmacy Technician Senior

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Two or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Licensure & Certification

“The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.”

Additional Information

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Functional supervision is received from a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager designee. General supervision is received from a Pharmacy Supervisor, Pharmacy Manager or other designated official.

 

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED

Functional supervision may be exercised over other Pharmacy Technicians.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
