Responsibilities*

Duties: 
Accountable for the delivery of direct patient care including patient education, symptom management, and telephone triage in a clinical ambulatory care setting to adult bone marrow transplant  and leukemia patients. 
Supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family; assesses the needs of the patient undergoing surgical/diagnostic/therapeutic procedures; plans, implements, and evaluates patient care; and teaches patients, families, orients colleagues and peers.  
Candidate will provide coverage within two nursing work teams in the BMT and Leukemia clinics.
 
The candidate must have demonstrated the following in his/her current position:

Accountable for the management of patient care assigned in an ambulatory care setting for hematology and oncology patients. 
Utilizes critical thinking skills to recognize and solve patient problems. 
Utilizes the nursing process and nursing standards to prevent or manage actual/potential patient problems in the clinical oncology setting. 
Identifies patient/family learning needs and ensures that they are met. 
Serves as a patient advocate. 
Assists with care coordination between multiple departments.
Works with a multi-disciplinary clinical and business team to ensure patients are managed and scheduled appropriately. 
Able to prioritize urgent medical issues, clinical flow and administrative tasks.
 
Communication and Respect: 
Maintains a highly professional and positive attitude regardless of workload and stress level. 
Inputs, retrieves and interprets data from multiple manual and computer based information systems. 
Responds to voice mail and electronic communication with the patients and colleagues in a timely manner. 
Exhibits professional verbal and non-verbal communication skills. 
Ability to delegate effectively and follow through appropriately and efficiently.

Completes assigned duties in an efficient manner, and utilizes time effectively.

Completes all other clinical and administrative duties as assigned.

Uses organizational skills to assure continuity of care in collaboration with other disciplines through appropriate planning, education and coordination of services. 
Delegates to other health care team members according to the Nurse Practice Act. 
Collaborates with providers (MD and APP) to facilitate and optimize the care of the patient. 
Self-directed and uses initiative and creativity to promote a positive team enviroment.
 
Research and Quality Improvement: 
Acts on behalf of patients and families to ensure care that is safe and appropriate with consideration for values, diversity and human rights. 
Participates in nursing and medical research and facilitates transfer of new knowledge to patient care. 
Participates in LEAN and the the Quality Improvement Processes.

Nursing Specific Info

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Required Qualifications*

A current licensure as a Registered Nurse to practice in the State of Michigan. 
Two (2) or more years of recent Hematology/Oncology RN experience.

BSN
One (1) or more years recent Ambulatory Care nursing experience. 
Bone Marrow Transplant clinical experience
OCN or BMTCN certification
ONS local and national membership 
Demonstrated ability to practice independently, set goals, promote teamwork, cross cover within clinical area, coordinate and perform multiple activities and problem solve 
Demonstrated ability to set and implement priorities, organize and delegate effectively and efficiently 
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate well with others (including peers)
Demonstrated abilities in interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills and problem solving skills within all levels of the health care team
 

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hrs per week 
Shift: Days, Mon – Fri, flexibility in hours is needed to meet patient care needs of the department
Location: C&W 7th floor,  Adult Bone Marrow Transplant & Leukemia Clinic 

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
