UHS provides clinical services throughout its primary care and numerous specialty clinics, as well as health and wellness education and promotion. Specialty clinics include: Allergy, Dermatology, Eating & Body Image Concerns, Eye Care, Nutrition, Psychiatry, Sleep, Sports Medicine, Travel and Women’s Health. Responsibilities*

Advanced Practice Professional

Under physician supervision, the NP/PA will be expected to:

  • Participate in the minor acute and chronic management of outpatient medical patients ranging from age 10 to the elderly.
  • Perform detailed history and physical examinations and develop appropriate management plans within various UHS clinics.
  • Develop problem-based care plans, prepare orders and prescribe medications.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic labs, radiologic studies, ancillary testing.
  • Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic and minor surgical procedures including but not limited to: suturing, incision/drainage of abscesses, skin biopsies, joint injection.
  • Provide typical office orthopedic care to patients.
  • Effectively communicate clinical information and follow up plans to patients.
  • Advise and educate patients concerning diet, hygiene, normal growth, prevention of disease, risk factor reduction, and other dimensions of wellness.
  • Assist in the appropriate referral of patients to both internal and external resources, including emergency care.
  • Provide at least initial evaluation of primary care related mental health concerns and, when appropriate, refer to other health professionals.
  • Respond in a timely manner to nursing concerns/requests.
  • Collaborate with other health care providers/clinicians to coordinate clinical care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation in compliance with UHS policies and procedures.
  • Provide timely and effective communication of patient needs to internal and external care providers.
  • Attend weekly conferences and staff meetings.
  • Complete regular peer review activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Assure patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignments.
  • Work effectively with and serve as a clinical resource for other UHS and Student Life colleagues.
  • Participate in the administrative functioning of UHS through participation in various committees, work-groups or special projects as directed by the Medical Director.

Required Qualifications*

Physician Assistant:

  • Current license and DEA to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.  
  • DEA license required, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required
  • Recent experience as a PA (within the last 5 years) in a primary care, ambulatory care, or urgent care setting.

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan. Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).  
  • DEA license required, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required
  • Recent experience as a NP (within the last 5 years) in a primary care, ambulatory care, or urgent care setting.

PA/NP:

  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • DEA License.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete primary care history and physical examinations; order appropriate diagnostic studies; synthesize information and make informed clinical decisions; develop appropriate care plans; and be responsive to patient and family preferences.
  • Ability to function independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated communication and customer service excellence with patients, family, staff and physicians.
  • The provider must demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge by using current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate assertively as a patient advocate.
  • Demonstrated ability to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diversity.

Desired Qualifications*

NP/PA:

  • Minimum 2 years of recent experience as a PA (within the last 5 years) in an ambulatory primary care or urgent care setting.
  • Experience caring for patients in a college health setting
  • Experience with adolescent patients with common ambulatory or urgent care conditions
  • Expertise in the evaluation and treatment of adolescents
  • Expertise in the evaluation and management of reproductive health concerns including screening for and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, prescribing of a variety of contraceptive technologies, and effective communication and counseling regarding other reproductive health concerns.
  • Experience in the performance of a variety of office surgical procedures including suturing.
  • Experience in the evaluation and treatment of primary care orthopedic medical conditions.
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to electronic medical record documentation and electronic order entry.
  • Experience with MiChart or Epic.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience with coordinating and managing complex and multifaceted projects.
  • Demonstrated expertise in facilitating the educational growth of others through previous clinical instructional roles.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills are desired.
  • Understand the unique needs of college students and the values, goals and mission of the Division of Student Affairs.

Work Schedule

Hours/week: 32 hours per week
Shift/Hours: Day shift; some early evenings and Saturday morning half-day coverage on a rotating basis. Start and finish times TBD.
