Enterprise Infrastructure

The HITS Enterprise Infrastructure division secures, manages, and architects Michigan Medicine data centers, networks, and communication infrastructures. The team is responsible for all Michigan Medicine IT-related technical infrastructure, including data centers and communication facilities; wired, wireless, and in-house cellular networks; spectrum management; communication; complex device management; fiber/wiring plant; hosting; directories, databases, and storage; and continuity of operations institution-wide. The team collaborates with partners across Michigan Medicine to assure the security, stability, reliability, scalability, and economic management of the institution’s technology infrastructure.

Job Summary

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) organization has an exciting opportunity to employ a Storage Engineer to support and maintain our NAS storage environment - primarily provisioning, using, patching, updating, and upgrading Isilon and NetApp storage systems. This position will report to the HITS Enterprise Infrastructure Storage Team which is responsible for implementing and managing the Michigan Medicine Enterprise Storage environment and providing infrastructure services to many of the enterprise wide applications used by Michigan Medicine (MM).

The storage team manages both NAS and SAN.  In the NAS storage farm, we currently have four Isilon Gen6 clusters totaling 128 nodes and 14 PB, and we have two NetApp clusters totaling 3 PB.  The candidate is expected to have daily hands-on experience with Isilon systems.  These systems provide network shares for clinical and research customers within MM.

The position requires someone who works well without supervision and who proactively anticipates and resolves problems. This role is expected to coach and mentor team members, to seek out and implement improved processes and technologies, to establish and document procedures and standards in a consistent manner, and to set an example for others by exceeding customer expectations.

Out of scope for this position, but in addition the storage team has a SAN footprint with a large Cisco SAN fabric stretched between two primary data centers; a large SVC virtualization farm with 5+ Petabytes of SAN storage.  IBM Spectrum Protect (TSM) is the primary software for backing up and recovering SAN block storage. The TSM complex consist of 4 TSM instances backing up over 2000 hosts and databases on a daily basis to redundant IBM 3584 tape libraries with 4 dozen IBM 3592 drives fronted by large disk pools located at each data center.  Knowledge of the SAN systems the storage team manages is not required, but is a plus to allow more cross team functionality.
