Department Overview:

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays an integral role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with exceptional technology-related information, products, services, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.

Division Overview:

Research Applications and Advanced Computing (RAAC) is a division within HITS that focuses on supporting the unique and important needs of the Michigan Medicine research enterprise.  We work directly with researchers to understand their IT requirements and provide them with or direct them to the significant information technology and services across the university that enable their research.  RAAC includes services associated with research computing, data services, programming and innovation, research device, engagement and consulting, and application support for the diverse research departments of Michigan Medicine.  

The Biospecimen Management team in RAAC provides technical expertise and administrative support of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is used by the Central Biorepository (CBR).  The CBR facilitates discovery and improves healthcare outcomes by providing high-quality, highly annotated biospecimens donated for basic, clinical and translational research. The CBR is an enterprise-wide resource, serving all members of the University of Michigan community. 

Job Summary

We are looking for a Senior Business System Analyst with experience in managing and configuring scientific applications.  This knowledge is key to serving our growing customer base of biomedical researchers and the expanding needs of the CBR.

Key aspects of this position are:

  • Lead research teams through scope definition, business workflow, technical requirements, and reporting needs
  • Develop and manage reports using various tools
  • Develop training materials for new users based on their system requirements
  • Train our expanding customer base  
  • Provide ongoing support for the customer base
  • Perform system testing, validation, and verification at defined intervals
  • Maintain compliance to all regulatory standards applicable to Biorepository operations
  • Participate in application planning activities such as upgrades, patches, testing, training, documenting and interacting with infrastructure teams to meet project goals

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications for Senior Position:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required for this position
  • At least five years of progressive experience in information technology business analysis (three years for intermediate)
  • At least five years of experience in a wide variety of business analysis techniques including interviewing, group facilitation, and logical data modeling (three years for intermediate)
  • Domain expertise in scientific research
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven collaboration, delegation, management and mentoring skills
  • Ability to write SQL queries
  • Knowledge of Oracle and/or other dbase systems
  • Working knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle

Required Qualifications for Intermediate Position:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required for this position
  • Research domain experience
  • Understanding of laboratory processes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven collaboration, delegation, management skills
  • SQL experience
  • Knowledge of Oracle and/or other database systems
  • Working knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working in a research lab or supporting research
  • Experience with LIMS such as LabVantage, LabWare, SQL*LIMS, Sample Manager
  • Experience with applications that are regulated by CFR 21 Part 11 or the College of American Pathologists (CAP)
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Record systems
  • Experience with:
    • ServiceNow, JIRA or other ticketing system
    • LucidChart, Visio or other process mapping tool
    • Tableau, Jasper Reports or other reporting tool
    • Informatica or other ETL tool
