Job Summary

Work in a supervisory capacity to the Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) in the Ambulatory Care segment of Michigan Medicine.  RDN practice types may include pediatric and adult primary care services, pediatric specialty services, and adult specialty services.

  • Provides supervision to ambulatory care services Registered Dietitian Nutritionists
  • Supervision received from Manager of Ambulatory Care Nutrition Services.
  • Leadership oversight also received from UMMG Care Management Directors
  • Liaison relationship with ambulatory care leadership and Medical Group colleagues
  • Preceptor to dietetic interns

Supervision to Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs)

  • Provide ambulatory care units support with RDN pre-hire analysis, screening and interviewing of RDN candidates, preparing/making RDN job offers.
  • Onboard RDNs into newly hired roles.
  • Facilitate RDN team meetings on a regular interval.
  • Address RDN questions/concerns related to patient care, clinic flow issues, optimizing patient screening criteria, and/or coordination of care.
  • Lead annual RDN performance evaluations.
  • Oversee RDN competency.
  • Coordinate RDN professional development opportunities.
  • Lead projects that support RDNs’ work and provision of resources to perform patient care.


Liaison Role to ambulatory care unit (ACU) leadership and medical group colleagues

  • Form relationships quickly at all levels in the organization to ensure effectiveness.
  • Lead regularly scheduled meetings with ACU leadership; which includes discussion of RD activity, billing, program progress or new initiatives.
  • Optimize processes across multiple areas in relation to nutrition referrals, billing, patient screening, and/or coordination and provision of high quality, evidence- based standards of care.
  • Support the education mission by interfacing with the Medical School (or others) looking to place students/residents into RDN related educational experiences.
  • Support/lead projects related to Care Management and RDN patient care related work.
  • Represent RDN services in Care Management/Ambulatory Care/Quality related meetings.

  • Provide quality service based on customer expectations and needs.

  • Practice effective time management.
  • Ensure RDNs achieve compliance with state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects as appropriate.
  • Collect outcome data to help improve RDN practice and demonstrate RDN outcomes.
  • Contribute/lead quality improvement efforts related to RDN work.
    • Ensure evidence-based best practices are at the center of improvement activities.  Facilitate the sharing of internal and external best practices across stakeholders.

Required Qualifications*


  • Strong ability to work both independently and as a team to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong communication, facilitation and presentation skills.  Ability to effectively communicate with staff from all levels of the organization.
  • Implement critical thinking to solve problems.



  • Bachelor’s degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by ACEND (Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  Requires primary source verification.
  • Master’s Degree in Nutrition related field.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
