Job Summary

The Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) in the University of Michigan Medical School seeks a House Counselor to be an integral member of the Student Services team.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Student Services, the Director of Student Services, House Counselors and Learning Specialist to implement programmatic strategies that address domains such as academic and personal counseling, career advising, wellness, and professionalism.  With oversight of counseling functions within one of the four M-Home houses, the new counselor will be part of a high functioning team supporting the short- and long-term academic and personal success of University of Michigan Medical School students.   

Responsibilities*

1. Serve as direct point of contact and provide a myriad of counseling services to medical students, including:

  • Crisis Counseling specific to academic, personal, or medical issues. Work across units, departments, and university resources to triage support and decision making. Implement and maintain effective networks to expand scope and impact of preventative counseling interventions.
  • Personal Counseling specific to proximal relationships. Establish foundation of trust, identify impact of relationships on academic performance and wellness, and provide guidance for expectations of professional behavior. Triage and refer to outside consultation as necessary.
  • Academic Counseling . Work directly with Learning Specialist in order to appropriately triage at-risk students in need of academic support and coaching. Partner with Learning Specialist to encourage use of services and de-stigmatize/normalize use of this support function.
  • Career Advising/Professional Development counseling specific to a student’s pursuit of medical residency or additional/separate degree program(s). Advise students on career choice, preparation of residency application materials, review personal statements for residency applications, arrange and provide mock interview sessions, troubleshoot with those students who are undecided in their career path. Work directly with the Assistant Dean for Student Services, the M-Home House Directors, and faculty career advisors to maintain and further develop a robust career advising program for medical students.
  • Counseling for students considering or being placed on a Leave of Absence . This includes leaves for research, dual degrees, educational purposes, as well as personal leaves of absences related to academic performance, health, etc. Maintains contact with students while away on leaves of absence and advises Competency Committees on “fitness for return” to medical student curriculum. Ensures continual updates to Leaves of Absence request and monitoring processes to ensure transparency to students, faculty, and staff.

2. Collaborate directly with other units and teams within the Office of Medical Student Education

  • Partner with multiple unites across OMSE, such as Financial Aid, Registration, Evaluation & Assessment, Trunk, Branches, etc., and advise on matters of significance. Where appropriate, intercede or follow-up with students in need of consultation and/or advocate on their behalf. This shall include such matters as leaves of absence, tuition or reimbursement implications, awards and honors, issues with the Electronic Residency Application service, attending and providing expertise to Competency Committees, Trunk and Branches meetings (COS, STOC, CTOC), Student Council, monitoring student academic performance, working with faculty to ensure they understand student perspectives and leaves, advising and reporting on mistreatment in the academic environments, etc.

3. Manage and coordinate primary accommodation requests from medical students.

  • Oversee defined process for the submission, review, and approval/denial of quiz/exam deferral requests. Communicate outcome of requests to medical students. Provide guidance to medical students and ensure adherence to the deferral policy for required experiences. Coordinate with the Learning Specialist to counsel students on University and federal processes for obtaining accommodations (such as extended time), work with faculty curriculum directors and leads to provide and communicate excused absences.

4. Draft letters of recommendation for medical students related to externships, scholarships and awards.

5. Develop and coordinate special programs for medical students, such as Wellness, Professionalism, panel discussions, and group/workshop experiences on issues relevant to medical students.

Required Qualifications*

1.  Masters Degree or Ph.D. in a relevant social or behavioral science discipline (e.g. Counseling, Psychology, Education).  Masters candidates must demonstrate relevant and related professional experience with clear progression in duties and responsibilities. Candidates must meet state licensing requirements. 

2.  Four-to-five years of experience working in educational setting, with demonstrable skills in academic and personal counseling with students.

3.  Ability to evaluate, synthesize, and communicate complex information.

4.  Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

5.  Proven ability to work well as a member of a team in a fast paced environment.

6.  Outstanding attention to detail and project deadlines.

7.  Proven ability to maintain individual rights to privacy and confidentiality.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
