Job Summary

Manages, directs and coordinates a clinical advanced practice provider team (APP) to include Physician Assistants (PA) and/or Advance Practice Nurses (APN) for a designated area, service or department. Administers overall operations of the APP team is to include clinical practice, staffing, staff development, strategic planning, budgeting, quality assurance, and administration of activities and personnel that impact inpatient and/or outpatient clinical operations. Develops implements and monitors patient care and revenue-generating departmental programs for APP teams while committing to work in their designated department/service regularly as a staff provider. 

The APP Manager is an experienced clinical leader and provider with exceptional communication and management skills who is committed to the highest level of patient care and business success.  The University of Michigan classification for this position is Administrative Manager Senior.

Position Effort Distribution: 0.6 FTE administrative, 0.4 FTE clinical practice

1. Administratively manages APP staff and operations and develops and administers policies and procedures.

2. Responsible for operational and tactical planning, contributing to strategic plans, assessing related processes, implementing techniques to promote and improve the quality and continuity of patient care and evaluating aggregate data for the purpose of assessment.

3. Develop and administer a strategic plan to manage APP activity.

4. Ensure that appropriate personnel are in place by developing and managing a staffing plan for the APP team.

5. Develop and monitor staff compliance with education and training requirements.

6. Review and assess clinical needs and, as required, proposes restructuring or creation of clinical services in both the planning and budgeting processes.

7. Review billing activity of APPs for the purposes of compliance, distribution of effort and in comparison to budgeted activity.

8. Ensure APPs function in accordance with federal and state regulatory standards and institutional policies and procedures.

9. Ensure appropriate goal alignment of APPs within the team, service and department.

10. Facilitate open channels of communication with members of the section/department faculty and administration by acting as a liaison among staff.

11. Schedule staff.  Coordinate work for APPs in section/department including training and orientation. Resolve scheduling and possible cross coverage issues as they arise with individual APP's. Maintain a central schedule resource that includes paid time off and CME.

12. Plan, review, and manage the administrative and operational activities of the section/department APP's related to productivity, quality assurance and regulatory compliance.

13. Direct the recruiting, interview, selection and orientation process for section/department APP positions.

14. Develop/revise job descriptions for APP's within the section/department.

15. Conduct performance evaluation of APP's, coach and mentor APP's with respect to opportunities for performance and professional growth. This includes distribution and collection of 360 degree feedback from faculty & APPs, individual chart reviews as required for ongoing professional evaluation or focused professional evaluation.

16. Provide oversight for credentialing and privileging process including selection of privileges appropriate to role and competency assessment including logging of minimum procedures required for APP privileges.

17. Review and update APP clinical competency milestone documents

18. Provide feedback to the assigned physician(s) regarding performance issues as may apply to the APP individuals or team.

19. Conduct review of Section/department operational and process issues as the impact/affect APPs.

20. Coordinate the development of section/department policies and procedures for APP’s.

21. Plan and direct educational activities for APP's within the section/department.

22. Facilitate and conduct planning, coordinating and evaluating section/department quality assurance and patient safety activities as they relate to APP's.

23. Participate as clinical leader on the management team for designated section/department. Meet regularly with Section/department administration to determine the need for any position or department-specific or competency-based education or assessment of APPs, in addition to the required UMHS annual mandatories. If specific needs are determined, work with section/department administration to define and implement those assessments.

24. Participate in and encourage activities among APPs to promote continued learning and professional growth. 

25. Act as central oversight for CME policy including review and approval of CME related expenses consistent with the policy within the section/department.

26. Identify opportunities and facilitate APP student experiences within section/department.

27. Attend continuing education offerings and staff development programs, review literature, and collaborate with other professionals.

28. Develop own performance plan consistent with the goals of the position. Evaluate own performance periodically with assigned physician 

29. Provide direct patient care for a percentage of appointment appropriate for the team and approved by the section/department. 

30. Provide oversight for lead APP positions (if applicable)



The APP Manager will have a primary reporting relationship to the Section/Department Head/Medical Director for clinical operation issues and to the Section/Department Administrator for administrative issues. When on clinical duty, the APP Manager will receive direction from the assigned physician. 

Administrative supervision is exercised over APPs working within the assigned unit.

The APP Manager will function as a liaison with the Health System Chief Physician Assistant and Director of Advanced Practice Nursing.

Required Qualifications*

  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required.
  • Possession of a current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan is required.
  • Five years APP clinical experience in specialty relevant to practice area
  • Three years supervisory experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of Advanced Practice Nurse and Physician Assistant work, state and federal regulations, and credentialing.
