Job Summary

The University of Michigan seeks a dynamic leader to serve as an Associate Director of Athletics and the Director of the Academic Success Program.

The UM Athletic Department Academic Success Program (ASP) is dedicated to the academic growth and development of learning skills of student-athletes as part of the Athletic Department’s Student Development program.  The ASP program vision is to provide support for student-athletes in their academic and athletic pursuits while promoting independence, responsibility, self-confidence and strong interpersonal skills.  Serving approximately 900 student-athletes on 29 intercollegiate teams, the program employs a full-time staff of approximately fifteen plus an array of part-time employees such as tutors, learning specialists, and building monitors.

The Director will administer the overall activities of the Academic Success Program within the UM Department of Athletics and will exercise supervision over all ASP professional and office support staff.  The Director will serve as a member of the Athletic Director’s Leadership Team.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide direction for successful provision of ASP services for student-athletes, including tutorial and study table programs, academic advising and support services.
  • Actively encourage, support and evaluate the professional growth and development of ASP staff.
  • Ensure that sound and effective business practices are in place in all operational areas within ASP including the financial, human resources, facilities and IT areas.
  • Work with ASP staff to set priorities and strategic direction for programmatic activities.
  • Oversee the systems and activities within the ASP that support monitoring of compliance with Big Ten, NCAA and UM academic eligibility rules.
  • Serve as the Athletics Department’s primary liaison to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the ASP to both internal and external constituents.
  • Develop and assure the effective implementation and use of information systems and business processes to measure program success, including the collection and evaluation of data such as graduation rates, grade reports, and faculty progress reports.
  • Ensure ongoing, effective communication among ASP staff, coaches and academic units regarding student-athlete academic performance.
  • Develop productive relationships with other key university departments and entities such as the Academic Performance Committee, the schools and colleges, the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of New Student Programs.
  • Represent ASP on committees related to student-athlete success.

Required Qualifications*

  • Masters degree, preferably in an area related to student advising, student retention, student programming or administration.
  • 5 years minimum work experience in academic advising at the university level.
  • Successful leadership experience in a large academic/student services setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully network across a multifaceted university community.
  • Experience developing and implementing college level academic programs.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Considerable experience in college athletic administration.
  • Considerable experience working with student-athletes.
  • Understanding of UM and Big Ten rules and regulations.
