Job Summary

Highly motivated individual sought for a research technician associate position in a basic science/translational laboratory in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan School of Medicine.

There are approximately 5,800 new cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) per year. The survival rate of adults with ALL has remained at 30-40%. ALL kills more children than any other cancer. Our goal is to identify and study the drivers of ALL in order to develop novel targeted therapies that are more effective and less toxic than current medicines. We use genetically engineered mice, primary human leukemia samples, and cell lines as model systems.

 

This position is for the lab manager. This position is primarily suitable for individuals who enjoy running their own projects and lab management/organization. This position will not require presenting the project in scientific forums or scientific writing. However, if he/she desires, this position could be modified for those individuals who desire concentrated training in biomedical research to become highly competitive for graduate school or medical school. For these motivated individuals, authorship on papers, traveling to research conferences, reading the literature and scientific presentations, and shadowing the PI in hematology clinic are among the many opportunities provided by the lab. The lab manager will also assist graduate students/postdocs and supervise undergraduate students in research projects studying the molecular pathogenesis of leukemia.

Responsibilities*

Experimental duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Breeding and management of the mouse colony

* Bone marrow transplantation

* Histopathological analysis of leukemia

* Retrovirus/lentivirus generation and transduction of oncogenes and RNAi into cells

* High speed flow cytometry and cell sorting

* ChIP, co-IP, qPCR, Western, and reporter assays

* Tissue culture

* Recombinant DNA Cloning

* Intrathymic injections


Non-experimental duties  include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Purchasing of laboratory supplies and equipment
* Maintenance of laboratory equipment
* Preparation of solutions and media
* Preparation and maintenance of frozen stocks
* Accurate record keeping

* Interaction with regulatory agencies

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a biomedical science is required and 0-1 year experience  
  • Must be comfortable being trained and working in diverse lab techniques.
  • Must be willing to become proficient in working with mice.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills are required.

Desired Qualifications*

Laboratory experience in mouse handling, molecular biology, viral transduction, and bone marrow transplantation techniques is desirable but not required.
