Job Summary

The University of Michigan’s Department of Film, Television, and Media (FTVM) and the Digital Studies Institute (DSI) at the University of Michigan invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Digital Media Production to begin September 1, 2020. This is a university year appointment and will be at the level of an Assistant Professor.

The Department of Film, Television, and Media integrates critical studies, screenwriting, and creative production. With a strong undergraduate curriculum of production and studies, a burgeoning doctoral program in film, television, and media and a faculty of award-winning scholars and media makers, the Department of Film, Television, and Media offers a vibrant intellectual and artistic community in the Midwest/Great Lakes region. The University of Michigan launched its new Digital Studies Institute, a vital research and teaching unit studying the social and cultural implications and effects of digital media, practices, and objects. This position will add a new area to FTVM offerings on media and culture through the lens of technology, and will enhance DSI’s existing expertise in media and digital culture.

Candidates should specialize in one or more of the following and ideally would move uidly across several: critical game design, animation and motion graphics, 3D modeling, AR/VR environments and storytelling, interactive design for storytelling, experimental digital film or television, mobile game design, mobile storytelling, digital media advertising, or additional specific areas of digital media making. Applicants should have strong visual arts sensibilities – in their production and pedagogy – and have mastery of one or more of the following: game mechanics, storytelling, and corporate game production pipelines from concept to marketing critical game design; mobile media industries and design; storytelling in the streaming, interactive era.

Ideal candidates might also have skills in, or general teachable knowledge of: animation, CGI and visual effects, experimental media production, virtual reality, and/or emerging production approaches in interactive fflm and television.


The successful candidate will maintain an active record of digital creative production and have teaching interests centered on helping students understand the practices, social impact, and cultural use of digital technologies. They may teach lower and upper division courses that utilize a variety of production software, including but not limited to: Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop, Avid Media Composer, Unreal, Unity, Twine, GameMaker, Godot and other popular game engines. Expertise in at least one of the aforementioned software programs is necessary; however, we are open to mastery of other software and hardware dependent upon the candidate’s areas of expertise.

Required Qualifications*

MFA or equivalent in digital media production or related field.

Record of produced work.

Teaching experience at the college level.

Demonstrated commitment to critical approaches to production and teaching.

Established ability to engage with students at all skill levels and to value the diversity of the student population in their pedagogy.
