Job Summary

The University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Program Manager to represent the Office of Academic Innovation in a program management role to ensure the successful design, development, launch, and operation of Online and Hybrid Degree Programs. A major strategic initiative within the Office of Academic Innovation, assisting academic units in the creation of online and hybrid degree programs represents both an enormous opportunity and challenge in advancing education at the University of Michigan.

Reporting to the Director of Online and Hybrid Programs, the Program Manager is responsible for managing a cross functional effort to advise academic units in launching and maintaining online degrees. The Program Manager collaborates with academic unit administrators, faculty, course teams, instructional designers, instructional technologists, IT staff, digital media specialists and external platform partners to assist in designing, developing and delivering Michigan’s online degree and hybrid programs.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist academic units in the development and launch of new online programs by serving as convener and liaison for communities and stakeholders that include teams of faculty, Office of Academic Innovation staff, administrators from academic units, and central administrative unit staff. 
  • Develops plans and timelines for program development and maintains documentation to disseminate required information to relevant stakeholders at regular intervals.
  • Serves as liaison to external platform partners to disseminate program management updates as necessary.
  •  Advises administrative and student support staff in academic units on effective models and practices for supporting students in online and hybrid programs. 
  • Coordinates with Office of Academic Innovation colleagues to create, disseminate and maintain resources, policies, and procedures for academic units to provide guidance and aid in the creation of online and hybrid degree programs.
  • Participates in conversations and communities on campus around digital learning, instructional design, project management and other topics related to carrying out the vision and mission of the Office of Academic Innovation.
  • Provides guidance and develops best practices and templates for developing capacity within academic units to design and deliver high-quality online and hybrid programs.
  • Develops guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness of current models for online and hybrid program development, and creates recommendations to improve the process. 
  • Works closely with marketing, enrollment, and admissions partners from academic units and with marketing teams from the Office of Academic Innovation to establish strategies and plans for setting and reaching enrollment and participation targets.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 or more years of related experience (educational technology, instructional design, learning science, information science) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree strongly preferred. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups at all levels within the University and ability to manage collaborative academic partnerships.
  • Experience working with diverse institutional stakeholders to develop and carry out operational processes for launching online and hybrid programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with faculty in a higher education setting to create and disseminate digital educational content.
  • Demonstrated experience translating organizational strategy into operations and implementation.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory considerations related to the delivery of distance education. 
  • Experience working with student support staff to design and develop services to support student persistence in online and hybrid programs. 
  • Ability to analyze and align technology solutions with instructional needs, current educational and technological trends, and campus­-wide goals/priorities and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of trends in technology, innovation, and higher education. Familiarity with: Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Open Educational Resources (OER), Learning Management Systems (LMS) like edX, Coursera, Canvas, and other educational platforms.
  • Enthusiasm for technology-enhanced learning in the context of a public research university.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems in conjunction with stakeholders.
  •  Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage workload under time constraints and conflicting demands.
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree and 5 or more years of related experience (educational technology, instructional design, learning science, information science) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with curricular design teams to design innovative distance education offerings.
  • Pedagogical knowledge of online and hybrid teaching, including instructional design theory and blended delivery.
  • Knowledge of strategies for assessing learning and programs, building teams, guiding consultative programs, and evaluating environmental factors that impact teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance frameworks related to distance education courses. 
  • Experience in a research ­focused university setting.
  • Formal project management experience. 
  • Experience with web delivery tools and languages like HTML, CSS and digital media platforms.
  • Supervisory experience in the context of digital education, higher education, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, technology and standards of digital media production.
  • Best practices, use cases, and implementation of numerous instructional technologies.

This position may be filled as a Program Manager Senior or Intermediate, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
