A Research Laboratory Technician Senior position is available in the lab of Dr. Tobias Giessen in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Passionate and highly motivated individuals interested in the chemistry, biology and engineering of microbial metabolism are encouraged to apply.
The Giessen Lab conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of basic and applied science utilizing a broad range of approaches including biochemistry, microbiology, structural biology and synthetic biology. The lab’s current focus lies on understanding and engineering large protein assemblies with a focus on megadalton protein organelles involved in stress resistance, nutrient utilization and pathogenesis. **NOTE: This is a one year term-limited position with the possibility of extension based upon need and funding.
The successful candidate will assume responsibility for onboarding new lab members, handling all issues related to lab safety, biosafety and other regulations, maintaining lab equipment, maintaining lab glycerol and plasmid stock lists, maintaining the chemical inventory, shipping, preparing general solutions and media, washing laboratory glassware, autoclaving, maintaining laboratory supplies, ordering and preparing monthly spending overviews. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to perform routine experiments that include molecular cloning, protein expression and protein purification. The position can grow to include work on a separate closely supervised research project, if desired.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry or related fields is required. At least 2 years of experience as a Lab Manager are required. The applicant should be highly motivated, detail-oriented and methodical, and able to work independently and as part of a team. The ideal candidate is good at multi-tasking and has strong communication organizational skills.
A Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry or a related field would be beneficial. For individuals with a Master’s degree, at least one year of experience as a lab manager for a molecular biology/biochemistry lab would be ideal. Experience with molecular cloning and protein biochemistry, in particular protein expression and purification, is desirable.
