Job Summary

The School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks multiple colleagues for tenure-track appointments (open rank) in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. We seek applications from a diverse group of scholars situated in one or more of the following research areas: access, choice, and/or enrollment in postsecondary education; teaching, learning, and student experiences in higher education, including in STEM fields; postsecondary outcomes; state policy; and organizations and leadership.  Our goal to recruit and retain a diverse workforce reflects our commitment to serve the diverse people of Michigan, to sustain the excellence of the university, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning.

Regardless of area, all applicants must have a track record of research and teaching demonstrating capacity to facilitate diverse perspectives, further equity, and promote inclusion for all students.  Scholars utilizing critical perspectives in research and teaching, as well as those whose research connects to School of Education colleagues and programs in K-12 education, are particularly welcome.  We seek scholars who can build on their expertise to play a major role in the creation and use of scholarship, who have strong methodological training in qualitative and/or quantitative methods, who will teach courses in areas of need, and who seek to influence institutional, national and international policies and practices to improve higher education.  Toward this end, we seek individuals with innovative ideas about how graduate education and research can contribute to the betterment of society and help postsecondary education meet contemporary challenges.  

 

Who We Are

THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF HIGHER AND POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

For more than five decades, CSHPE has been one of the premier preparation programs for higher education scholars, practitioners, and leaders. It is distinguished by its breadth of opportunities within this interdisciplinary field, by meaningful research of national significance, and by generations of graduates who provide exceptional leadership through scholarship and practice. Students and faculty alike are attracted by the wide range of topics reflected in its curriculum and in Center-sponsored research projects and professional activities.

The Center offers PhD and MA degrees in higher education. The graduate programs seek to: 1) to build understanding of higher education as an area of academic inquiry, scholarship and practice; and 2) to prepare students for administrative, policy, and scholarly careers in higher education. Master’s students have the option of dual degree programs in Public Policy and Higher Education (MA/MPP) and in business (MA/MBA). Doctoral students construct their academic programs from four concentration areas: Academic Affairs and Student Development; Organizational Behavior and Management; Public Policy; and Research, Evaluation and Assessment.

The Center benefits from the rich and diverse set of resources of the University of Michigan. The Center seeks to build on these resources by continuing and strengthening its linkages to other disciplines and university units. These include the Ford School of Public Policy, College of Engineering, Ross School of Business, Center for the Education of Women, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, and the National Center for Institutional Diversity, among others.

Responsibilities*

Candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, teach graduate courses, advise graduate students, direct doctoral dissertations, and serve as an active member of the School of Education, the University, and higher education professional communities.  Experience mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, including women, students of color, and first-generation college students, is desired.  For tenured positions, joint appointments may be possible within the School of Education or with other schools and colleges.

Required Qualifications*

Candidates should have a record of outstanding scholarship that contributes to the study of higher education.  Appointments may be at the rank of assistant professor (tenure track) or associate or full professor (with tenure). At all levels, demonstrated teaching ability, strong methodological skills, and desire to develop sponsored research are required. 

Successful candidates will have:

  • A doctorate in higher education, education, or a related social science field
  • A strong record of research and publication in one or more desired higher education specialization areas
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to teach higher education courses at the master’s and/or doctoral levels
  • A strong interest in advising and mentoring graduate students
  • Candidates for associate or full professor will be nationally-recognized scholars with a strong record of empirical studies and grants in higher education
  • Candidates at the assistant professor level will have outstanding potential and a defined research agenda related to higher education

  • Prior administrative and/or public policy experience in higher education is highly desirable.  

Additional Information

We plan to fill positions with a start date of September 2020. Salary will be negotiated on the basis of the candidate’s experience and qualifications.  Appointments are for the nine-month academic year with possible additional remuneration for administrative duties. Salaries at the University of Michigan compare favorably with those at other leading universities.
