Job Summary

The University of Michigan’s new Digital Studies Institute (UMDSI) seeks to hire a founding Executive Director.  This is a ground-floor opportunity to shape an innovative new organization that will contribute towards our understanding of the digital world in a university setting.  The UMDSI serves students, researchers, and the public and the Executive Director will provide programmatic leadership for the Digital Studies Institute.  They will partner with the Faculty Director (who will lead the faculty and research direction), the Associate Director (who has primary responsibility for the curricular program and summer institute) and the Chief Administrator (who provides operational leadership) to assure that the UMDSI creates an inclusive and generative space for digital studies students, staff,  and faculty.  The Executive Director will also have primary responsibility for assuring that the UMDSI programs are complementary and in partnership with other institutional units involved in digital work – including, but not limited to the Duderstadt Center, the University Library, Information Technology services, etc.

Administrative duties will include: (1) develop academic programming, partnering, and outreach for UMDSI creating a community of scholars and researchers amongst digital studies faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff; (2) with help of the administrative staff, manage the recruitment, admission, and matriculation of students to the graduate and undergraduate programs, develop ancillary programming, and plan and execute events for the community showing the work of students and faculty; (3) attend faculty and administrative meetings to give advice and information concerning the program; (4) co-program and support the annual Summer Institute ; (5) manage the UMDSI’s research funding support process for UM researchers; (6) research and collect information concerning best practices in digital studies teaching and research; (7) serve as a liaison with other units on campus to facilitate the provision of technical support and training for students and faculty in the Digital Studies program; (8) serve as the primary development liaison for the UMDSI by partnering with major gift officers in LSA Advancement to connect to individual, alumni and corporate partners to support the UMDSI academic and research programs; and (9) draft internal and external grant proposals in support of the UMDSI mission and programming.

Required Qualifications*

An advanced degree or equivalent, understanding of the academic environment and resources that it has to offer, ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with a broad spectrum of students, faculty, administrative staff, policy makers, and public constituents/stakeholders (industry, media, etc).  Demonstrated leadership experience that includes recruiting, mentoring, career development, and team building.  Experience in project management, programming, budget management, program development and assessment.  An Entrepreneurial stance towards development.

Additional Information

This is a 3 year term limited position.

The salary range is $60,000-$95,000, please note a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidate’s experience
