Course Description

Applicants to this posting will be considered for one 25% GSI grader position in ASIAN 225.

ASIAN 225: Introduction to Hinduism

Hinduism is a major world religion practiced by over a billion people, primarily in South Asia, but it also was the precursor of Buddhism, and along with Buddhism it had a major impact on the civilizations in East and Southeast Asia. This course will cover its origins and development, its literature, its belief and practices, its unique social structures and doctrines, its interactions with other religions, and finally its confrontation with and accommodation of 'modernity.'

Responsibilities*

Key Responsibilities: Attend lecture twice a week; grade homework, papers, and tests; proctor exams; keep accurate grading records and record final course grades; attend regular meetings with the lead instructor of the course.

Required Qualifications*

Previous coursework in South Asian studies, Asian religions and/or Hinduism.

Desired Qualifications*

Undergraduate degree in Asian Studies, Philosophy, or Religion.  Enrollment in a graduate program focused on Asian studies or religion.  Previous experience in higher education instruction, preferably within the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures or a related discipline.

Students whose undergraduate degree is from an institution where the language of instruction is not English must have already taken or be currently enrolled in the English Language Institute’s ELI 994. The student must have a passing score of 4 on the Oral English Test (OET).
