Job Summary

To functionally perform 6-minute hall walks, non-invasive diagnostic tests to include stress echocardiograms, routine treadmills, dobutamines, and cardiopulmonary exercise stress tests. Reading and interpreting EKGs and stress tests. At several stress testing sites; Cardiovascular Center, Dominos Farms, Brighton Center for Specialty Care, West Ann Arbor, Chelsea Health Center, Briarwood building 5, Northville Health Center.

To collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of Exercise Physiologist, nurses and registered dietitians as a case manager in Phase II and Phase III cardiac rehabilitation. Educate patient on the importance of and effects of exercise, diet, and other health promotion topics.   Conduct, Exercise Consults on patients with multiple comorbidities. Perform daily treatments on patients undergoing enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP).

Responsibilities*

As an Exercise Physiologist with Michigan Medicine, you will work directly with patients at seven stress testing and 2 Cardiac Rehabilitation locations. You’ll work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment in combination with physicians, nurses, dietitians, and other medical professionals to determine patients’ needs and monitor progress to ensure the best care is coordinated. The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for conducting the following:

Stress testing:

  • Conduct 6-minute hall walks, cardiopulmonary exercise tests, stress echo’s, routine treadmills and research stress tests.
  • Maintain integrity of all testing, training and related data within the stress testing lab.
  • Conduct all tests according to stringent research protocol and policies and procedures created by Michigan Medicine.  
  • Good understanding of physiological response to exercise and the ability to interpret preliminary results of a stress test. 

Cardiac Rehabilitation:

  • Lead classes within the Phase II Cardiac Rehab ensures safe use of exercise equipment and body mechanics and develops exercise prescription based on stress test results.
  • Educates patients on cardiovascular disease risk factors.
  • Develop and conduct the fitness tests, including body composition analysis, and muscle strength, flexibility and endurance assessments.
  • Prescribe specific programs of exercise to patients and counsel them on how to achieve their fitness goals.
  • Assists Exercise Physiologist in obtaining, evaluating and reporting outcomes for the Cardiac rehabilitation programs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of special exercise programs for individuals with health problems.  Responsible for evaluating the patients’ physiological safety and effectiveness and for teaching classes (e.g. cardiac rehab, arthritis exercise, etc.).
  • Serve as a consultant and speaker on the importance of and effects of exercise and other health promotion topics.

Other Duties:

  • Assist in the establishment of data collection into Redcap for cardiac rehabilitation and the Metabolic fitness program.
  • Contribute to the advancement and promotion of services through participation in professional associations, writing articles for publications and representing the Medical Center in community activities.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and be prepared to perform CPR or other necessary emergency first aid procedures, while seeking appropriate medical assistance.
  • May supervise work of other physiologists, including hiring, evaluating performance and discipline.
  • May train staff and students in new or revised work methods and procedures.
  • Effective documentation skills, in multiple systems: LSI, Epic, Apollo, GE, Medgraphics Ultima.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s in exercise physiology, exercise science or a related field. 
  • Certification in BCLS and ACLS upon hire.
  • Experience in clinical testing, exercise prescription and evaluation.
  • Certification by the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist is required within one year of hire.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in exercise physiology, exercise science or a related field.
  • Health education and wellness program experience.  
  • Six months Cardiology experience and/or internship in cardiac rehabilitation.
  • One year experience in both stress testing and cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Certification by the American College of Sports Medicine as an Exercise Physiologist.
  • Experience with health education, coaching, and wellness programs.
  • Experience with research.

Work Schedule

The schedule for this position will be full time day shift, with varying shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm, however, you may be asked to work occasionally to 8:30pm. Occasional weekends may be required.
