Job Summary

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.  Candidates must possess a DDS/DMD and/or a PhD or equivalent.

The associate dean is responsible for the direction and oversight of the undergraduate, pre-doctoral and graduate masters and specialty curricula, and oversight of the operations of admissions, student affairs, financial aid, academic support services, educational resources, and the registrar in the School of Dentistry. Candidates should have established credentials as an administrator, special knowledge of a pre-doctoral and graduate dental curriculum, and proven leadership expertise. Candidates should have a demonstrated scholarly distinction appropriate for a tenure or clinical track appointment at the associate professor/professor level. Candidates should have an understanding of and a commitment to the contributions of diversity to excellence in academic endeavors. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dentistry. The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work with departments and other committees to evaluate, design and monitor current and future curricular needs and effectiveness, i.e. Interprofessional Education;
  • Develop, implement and monitor an effective outcomes assessment program;
  • Coordinate accreditation activities;
  • Serve as liaison to basic science departments for academic programs;
  • Oversee graduate education, including serving as an ad hoc member of the Graduate Studies committee consisting of graduate specialty program directors;
  • Oversee the operations of educational resources in the development of academic information systems, improvement and evaluation of instruction;
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Student Services to ensure that the educational program demonstrates commitment to a humanistic culture and learning environment;
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the development and implementation of curricular initiatives;
  • Work with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness  on faculty issues and collaborate in developing a school-wide faculty development and mentoring program; and in support of the school’s strategic plan as it relates to students and curriculum; and
  • Work with the Associate Dean for Patient Services to ensure students are able to achieve clinical competence.
